Whats this called?
« on: Nov 24, 2004, 08:11:53 PM »
What is this bearing and seal called?  It's the drum and axle part of a rear 8 inch axle.  I need new ones.  And how much would they cost for 2 sets?

Rear axle bearing, seal(s) & retainer (comes w/ bearing). Cost me around $70.00 to change mine

Axle bearings and axle seals. I was quoted 60$ apiece from NAPA and I bought the Toyota factory seals from Marlin, around 5$ each.

Lucky for me I did'nt need the bearings. Marlin checked them out and said they were A OK.
What is wrong with the bearings?

You are a little slow tonite Muddybuddy :slap:
Those bearings & retainers will need to be pressed on & off. It can be done by hand but it is a hassle.

Its cheaper to get the seal kit from Napa then it is to get the bearing by itself.  The seal kit coonstists of the retainer sleeve and the bearing and it cots about $10 less then the bearing by itself.

I am getting them for free from a friend.  Hopefully they come with everything.  When the tire was off the ground it would move a little when i pushed on it, both sides.  I took it apart because i thought my R&P was going out.  But it is fine, so now it is time for new bearings before i sell the axles.

the only other thing you might need is the big o-rings that seats in that rusty groove between the backing plate and housing. i know napa doesnt have them, i believe they are a dealer item.

There is also a seal that goes in the end of the axle housing.

The seal (pn# 1177) is what keeps the gear lube in the housing.  If the bearing went even a little bad the seal should be replaced.
