85 SR5 tank in an 85 non SR5 4runner
« on: Jan 07, 2010, 03:38:40 PM »
I have read all the old posts on this but no one answered a simple question. This may be a no brainer since they are the same vehicle but will a gas tank from an 85 SR5 4runner with a 17.2 gal capacity directly bolt to my 4runner non-SR5 with a 14ish tank.  I want to keep it as close to stock and clean as possible but 2.5-3 gallons more would be very useful for what I do. I know how to pull the tank and that's not hard....just want to make sure before I go shopping.

Thanks

The tank will fit. I swapped the bigger tank in (No idea what year it was from) and the only difference I encountered was the float for the gas gauge. It's worth the time and you can raise the tank at the same time.

100% worth the headache as it gets you a legitimate 280-300 miles between fill-ups on the highway(of course, depending upon your gearing and so on)

That said, IIRC, you can also fit in larger tanks from some of the Tacomas and so on. 21 for Tacomas and 23 for the 3rd Gen 4Runners.  If this is possible, of course get more capacity.  Filling up every 400 miles is the magic number for road trips. :)

What tanks will be bolt on and what fabrication for a tacoma or 3rd gen 4runner. Do I need their fuel pumps and fuel gauge sender? Will my pump and sender work in the late model tanks? A 400 mile range would be great and worth the work for me....there is a lot of nowhere here in Idaho where gas is sparse. I know I can use jerry cans but that is a pain and takes up space.

Just look at your tank before you start looking for another and maybe you will get lucky.
The bigger tank I put in mine was as easy as it gets. The fuel pumps inside the tanks are the same (Keep the extra pump in the rig for an emergency) and the only difference I had on the fuel sending unit was that one had 2 wires and one had 3. Instead of worrying about wiring I used my original sending unit and made the rod to the float longer. After that just start  :driving:
