NEED HELP!!!
« on: Jan 06, 2010, 11:20:20 AM »
Alright, So I have a 1987 2wd toyota pickup and my speedometer just stopped working. I beleive my cable is fine so I pulled the speedo pickup out of the transmission and found that the speedo gear on the output shaft spins and moves around on the output shaft freely... Is that supposed to happen?? I don't see any where on the output shaft for a woodruff key.. How is it normally secured in one spot?  ???  :help: Thanks

If it was me I would spray the parts down with some brake cleaner to remove any oily residue, then Superglue it all back together...

I have no idea if that is the correct thing to do in the situation though.

haha it is inside the transmission on the output shaft. It looks like there are two dowel holes in the shaft and I can see a groove in the gear where it would sit.. Does anyone know if it does use dowel and how would they just fall out??

If it's anything like the 4x4 T-case speedo drive gear, it should have a ball sitting in a pocket in the output shaft and a slot in the gear that lines up with the ball.

Just a guess.

Ya, I dissected a spare 4x4 one and it's different.. It looks like it takes either 1 or 2 little round dowels but I'm not sure cause there are none there and I don't see how you would get both in or if there was just 1 what would hold the gear from moving till it fell out... I dunno. I think tomorrow I might just go down to toyota and have them look up the parts on the microfiche.. Thank you all for your help and if anyone does read this and might know or have a suggestion please feel free to comment!! I can use all the help I can get!
