hydro probs with seals
« on: Jan 01, 2010, 04:21:14 PM »
I have a pretty good leak coming out of where the steering shaft goes in to the box(worm gear assembly), I looked at some exploded views of the steering box and all I can see is some o-rings. Just wondering if this is a common thing and if there is a way to fix it so it wont happen again and how intense is it to do this job. any advice is appreciated thanks.

Are you using Power Steering Fluid or ATF? FSM calls for ATF, PS fluid can make the system leak.

Go to the dealer and see if they can order you a seal kit. I was told that you can also get a kit from NAPA, but that is hearsay because I have never bought one from there.

Just bought the truck and the hydro came on it so I don't know which he used. I was wondering if its a common thing to blow out seals with the added pressure from the hydro assist, Its not a daily driver so I don't want to wast time and money resealing the whole thing just to have it happen again not to far down the road

When I was running HA I used a PSC hi-out, hi-pressure pump and never blew seals, in fact when my ram went south at JV I took it off, capped the steering box and ran it for two more days of wheeling. Did not hurt the box,in fact it was the best my stock steering ever worked. I am betting it had PS fluid in it, not ATF.

I will say this, re-sealing a steering box is not the easiest thing to do. Not really hard but time consuming and you have to be careful not to cut the teflon seals or lose any of the balls.

Here is a link for a 93 FSM on rebuilding the box. I do not know if this is the same as yours but you can check out what you are in for.
