Issue with 1980 K5 drivetrain......
« on: Nov 20, 2009, 02:58:57 AM »
My buddy has an 80 K5, stock gearing, stock 3spd w/granny, NP205. when he engages his 4lo or 4hi and locks his hubs,... heres what happened....

We went to HH to play with the new toy, his hubs were lokd and he was in4lo... he backed up and the rear wheels were skiddin. he went forward and then the front wheels were skiddin. we have talked to a couple people that are saying this is a problem when the hubs start to wear out. when in the locked position, the "turn key" has a lot of in/out play. the first thing that we were told is this happens when the gearsets are not matched front and rear. we are gonna check that this weekend to verify that both axles are matched gears.

any suggestions?!

^ That would be my guess also.... Can't see how worn hubs would cause cause axles to lock up.

Sounds like the problem is that your hubs don't say "Asin" on them.

LOL..no, they dont say ASIN on them. lol. we swapped out the stock hubs for a set of Mile Marker 3/4 turn hubs. the other hubs had a fair amount of play.. next were gonna go to the gearsets and make sure all is well in both. then its time to go thru trans/trsnfr. his u-joints are pretty worn out. those will be done when do the gearsets.
