I'm going to guess it's a pre 95 rear axle because the drop down brakeline connection on the axle is on the passenger side (I thought Tacos drop on the driver side).

its obviously an 8" if its an e-locker. you'll have to measure the wms on it to find out if its a Tacoma housing or not. i don't know of any other ways to identify the difference in those housing..though im sure there's something. Checking the wms would tell you. or just measure the backing plate distance and i can go out and measure my Tacoma housing and compare the numbers. that way you can get a more accurate measurement without taking the tires off.

how wide is it..  We already knew it was a 8"..  it has to be since it is a elocker..  Is it 55" wide WMS to wms or 58" wms??  It looks like a IFS width axle at 58" to me..

:smack: Since when can you mount an 8" diff in a taco housing, and if its 58"s wide its not a Taco housing, and like you said if it has an E-Locker it cant be a taco housing. Taco housings are 60" WMS not 58" until 05' then they went to 64"

The bowl on the back of the housings are deeper on a Taco housing.

This should help too.

am i totally misunderstanding what this threads about or what. i don't understand what you are saying. what do you mean since when can an 8in diff be in a taco housing. the taco e lockers that came in a Tacoma housing is 8inch. the non e locker Tacoma diffs are referred to an8.4 (even though there technically still 8inch ring gear..there just stronger and more beefy cuz they are trussed and larger diameter pinion shaft). the Tacoma 8inch e locker can also fit in a slightly modified pre 95 axle housing. Yota Wut asked if his housing it from a Tacoma or a traditional pre 95 8in housing. it could be either one...a complete Tacoma e locker with its original housing (60"wms)...or a Tacoma e locker with a pre95 modified housing (58"wms). both the housings looks pretty much the same its just the wms that's different.

there nothing in this thread that's relating to an open 8.4 inch Tacoma diff (which is already not what he has). that's a completely different setup. he has an electric locker.

The bowl on the back of the housings are deeper on a Taco housing.

This should help too.

this is true, only to the 8.4 diff Tacoma that came with open carriers. the Tacoma with stock e lockers aren't any deeper
