Is there any rust on the frame? Drop the fuel tank (it has a drain plug) and check the inside of the frame behind it... I found a canyon on mine.

this is an awesome truck! i just got an 83 and it has alil rust im hoping when i get the cab off its not like this, I still need to buy a welder! Im getting my engine tomorrow, what did you do to yours? just a rebuild?

no i blew it up.    ran a rod through  the block    so im rebuilding one that i got off of craigslist.    little by little   got to many toys   not enogh  time  but she shoud be coming a long

The only stock vehicle that came with gears over 4.38 from the factory were 4Runners with 4.88 and an auto iirc... My first gen came with 4.38's. 5.29's are aftermarket, marlin has the gears for like 195ish.
