this may seem like a silly question, but I would like to know what the advantages of using a split case transfer case are?

also,  what are the differences between a split case and a dual case?

are there advantages of one over the other?

are you talking about a divorced case setup?

I believe so, but not sure.  the way it was described to me (if I understood right, which I am not sure I did), the transfer case would have two sections, with one section to eac axle.  there would be an additional t-case shifter for the front axle.  I may have totally misunderstood the description, though.

to me, that sounds lie ka front dig type setup, allowing the front and back ends of the truck to be independent of the otehr and on axle shutoff from power?

that isn't a divorced setup, divorced setup is like having a small driveshaft between the tranny and tcase, like with a 2wd tranny then the shaft to a tcase type of deal

your first description sounds more like what I was being told.  and truthfully, I am not sure they were seperate, just that the front axle would have its own t-case shifter.  I suppose that is part of where my confusion is coming from.

i believe the setup I am talking about is the same as what megolfer was running, before he sold it  (reading his thread:  http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=61323.0  )

Landcruisers have what is called a "split case"  its just the different type of cases they had,

also the case with a shifter for the front and one for the back is a dana 300, commonly found in International Scouts

Splitcases are stonger that any othger landcruiser transfercase or mini truck treansfer case.  They are offset rear so they will only work with offset rear axles
