Looking for recommendations on what you think would be a good

Thanks for the replies.
I should have been more specific.
I am looking to do an engine swap and I want to be able to take
it along and check a vehicle before I buy it and to use for diagnosing after
the swap is done.

If you only need to read the codes, you can get them cheap at Harbor Freight.

If you have a laptop or computer with a long USB cable, then I HIGHLY recommend

http://www.obddiagnostics.com

Here are some examples of it in use in my build-up thread, Reply #565:

Only about ~$80 and I've used it on over 20 different vehicles now. I love how easy it is to use, and I can immediately take screen shots and save everything to my computer including full simulation data.

I 2nd the ScanGauge II... I had some issues with some gauges not working on my engine swap when I owned a jeep. it helped me out tremendously... although it will only give you the code and not the meaning...

Costco has a decent portable OBDII scanner for $36.  It's a little handheld unit that's powered by the OBDII socket.

The scan gauge will also monitor the sensors and read them on the screen in real time.

I own both a scangauge 2 as well as an autoTap... both work great however I like the scangauge 2 more as its small and portable and I can take it with me and use it as gauges....

A couple of questions on the ScanGaugeII.

Are there any other wires required to be hooked up besides the OBDII?

On the miles left to a tank of fuel, is there a way to gallons of fuel that the
tank holds?

Thanks.

No, the port only.

If you program it that way it will estimate how much is left.  Mine is in the truck all the time and it is cool to see open and closed loop, or throttle position at any give time.
