I have an Idea to build a tool box that goes under the bed or rear of a runner where the spare normally goes. I don't see many people running spares under there so I thought would be a great place to put a tool box. I just hope my description is OK. So if you build a square box with a hole in the center you could crank it up and down like you would a tire. Water tight etc. Saves room inside. What do you think?  :dunno: If you build one you have to send me a dollar (Turtle point) for stealing the idea.  :beerchug:

I get crawler's idea; so you can remove it and it's also pretty theft-proof, right?
That's another good idea in the link; tough part would be making the actual box/hinges... or maybe just buy 'em.

No I want it to be outside, under the truck. So if my Runner is full of camping crap I can lower the tool box down from where the spare tire would hang and access tools. picture a box 30x30x6in deep hanging from the chain that your spare once hung from. You wouldn't need hinges because the lid would be held on by the the force of the chain holding it in place.     I hope my description is getting better not worse.

That is a different idea.  Are you planning to store just parts or tools as well?  Are you planning to pass the chain through the center and lift from the bottom like the spare does, or from the top?

Have you considered a drawer box inside the Runner, something similar to this:

It would still allow you to carry camping gear and still access parts/tools w/o unloading the gear.  If you have the clearance you could do an external drawer box as well, and have the drawer open through the bumper
