Hello All, found this site through a search from POR and thoroughly like the quality of post I've been reading.

I've had the wheeling bug for years now and within 1 mile from home I am blessed with some awesome Forest Service roads -> Deactivated Roads -> Greasy trails -> overgrown goat trails -> ATV trails -> foot traffic only paths, to discover.  Good thing I don't own a Quad or my family would loose me a week at a time.  :gap:

Blown new 22RE - Long Story  - but am following Big Mike's and IFSSucks' write up with the Taco Swap in salivating interest.

Live in Vernon British Columbia and work professionally as a Network Administrator, so this swap is a hobbyist's stretch :screwy:

Yeah she's a screamer alright but those 22RE like to rev, expecially when balanced and fresh. Remember her weight... 4.10s made her clutch chatter and force full throttle on all shifts; milage was terrible.   Engine went due to machinist error and subsequent  :bull crap:

Oh BTW my other hobby project is\was  :wink2:

I have my 22RE rebuilt as a long block 20 000 miles ago, 18 months.  The engine always had a slight rattle and I assumed it was timing chain as my research showed that some 22Res were just clattery.  After much tinkering with the lash, it grew to where I suspected piston slap as it would not clatter under load but whenever I came off the throttle, idled or cruizen and it would clatter badly.
BTW ever since I got this engine back I have been running about 200psi at crank.  The engine is 20 over, www.shadboltcam.com – which are Toyota cams with a slight grind to them for more bottom end.  Very popular here in BC

Turned out to be a combination of piston slap and bearings.  I must have gotten debris into my bearing as they were scorched but not yet spun.  There was "unacceptable" play in the wrist pin bearing as told by a local respectable machinist, which denotes the brass bushings were worn.  You can also see the skirts on the pistons were polished.  I posted some picks http://www.members.shaw.ca/kenklecker/

The Machinist says something to the following: :bull crap:

Compression was high due to using this cam – which is odd since so many 22R\RE here are running these are they are very mild.  Also how can cam duration at crank cause such an increase of about 25psi from stock.

Engine has been lugged and "bagged". – this is my DD and I don't abuse it.   :screwy:

The high compression and lugging it with my oversized tires – 33s – and stock gears caused there to be to much pressure on the pistons causing the top of the rod bearing to crush, and the wrist pin bushings to collapse.   :shake:

This engine was blocked and planed but it was the cam that caused the compression to be so high hence the damage.

Basically I am SOL.:maddest:

Now with me having to have my bottom end rebuilt, and incidentally with the water journals on my head being to eroded, I am looking at about $1500 CAN to get that 22RE back in my truck.... Why put that money in a 22RE – again – when I can swap in something better.
