Dirty intake
« on: Aug 06, 2009, 05:09:37 PM »
So I'm replacing the head gasket on my 85 4Runner (EFI) and taking care of a nasty oil leak when I discovered the upper (mostly upper) and lower intake are filthy.  I pulled the throttle body off and it is a black hole of a thick, goo like oil substance built up on the inside.  Some parts are easily 1/8-1/4" thick.  It is really smooth and not gritty like the usual oil/grease/dirt/dust buildup you find on the outside of an engine.  I did have an open air filter (which I tossed) that had a small hole in it from rubbing against the old air intake box.  Could this build up be from sucking an oil/duct particulate mixture due to the nasty oil leak I had?  Even the crossover air tube has a light film of oil in it but nothing like the buildup inside the air intake.

Any ideas of how this build up occurred?  Any ideas of how to clean it out that don't involve long screwdrivers and scraping for hours on end?

It's from the EGR and PVC system........

Without a carb, there's no gasoline in the airstream to keep the upper manifold clean.......

So I guess I don't have to bother cleaning it out then...

You could  clean as much as you can out, and then use the Seafoam.

If it's that thick, Seafoam won't clean it out..........

Killing the EGR will help but a lot of it is from the 5th injector too.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Your truck will run better if you clean out the upper intake and throttle body.

I usually remove all parts off the intake and shoot it with carb cleaner or brake cleaner. Works pretty good
