My Son-In-Law bought some venting for his attic to keep it cooler thus keeping the house cooler. They would have installed it all for $150.00. He didn't want to pay to have it installed so he planned on doing it himself. Today he sits in the hospital after falling off his two-story house with a completely shattered ankle. He tried doing it alone and fell off the ladder, this is why you always use the buddy system when things can go wrong.

Stuff happens. What would the friend have done, caught him? Then you would have 2 people in the hospital. He could have tripped goin to pay the installers and broke his arm.

Too bad about his accident, I hope he has insurance, and that he has a reasonably quick recovery. Busted ankles can mean trouble for a loooooooong time.

No problem in DIY to save some $$, too bad it backfired on him this time. But most of us would do the same thing, why pay someone to do something we should be able to take care of ourselves? No different than wrenching on your rig vs paying a mechanic for everything. Safe to say he didn't plan the job thinking he would fall off his house.
My goal in life is to be as a good a person as my dog already thinks I am.

Just getting home from the weekend at their house. He's pretty bad going to need more surgery's to fix his ankle.

As to "what was the buddy going to do catch him", no the buddy holds the ladder so that it doesn't fall.

I climbed up and got his tools and stuff off the roof, with the same ladder and had someone holding it and I didn't fall.

They do have insurance but when they bought the house (recently) they took a lesser policy so they do have about $2,000.00 out of pocket expenses right now. Not thinking about it they didn't even think about their homeowners policy to help cover it until I told them to check. It seems that it may cover some if not all of the rest of the expenses. Only thing they are concerned with is how much if any it will kick the premium up.
