Chevy Dana 44 - Year?
« on: Jun 01, 2009, 06:10:51 PM »
Anyone know a way to tell what year a Chevy D44 axle is. I've checked the axle for any kind of ID number, but did see any. I need to get some new hub bearings for it.

Here's the type of diff cover it has if it helps.

TIA

3 CAT scans a MRI and some time with the shrink and it's comfirmed. I'm just not right in the head.

I thought about doing that tomorrow. I was repacking the bearing and the first side was just fine, but when I went to knock the seal out on the other side half the bearing come out before the seal did. It wasn't broken or anything just knocked the cage right off. It looked like a pretty cheap brand too. Other then falling apart it looked like it was still good. The rest of them were Timken (great bearings IMO). Just thought I'd check here first before having to tear the first side apart again.

should be a date stamp & a BOM (bill of material) stamped into the long side axle tube
this is for 60's but will help locate (scroll down to axle ID by BOM )

Thanks for the info kyota.

I did get and installed the bearings this morning and found out it's in the 77-89 years. I'll double check the axle for a date stamp.

Ok found the date on it. Thanks again for the link, would have never seen it there.

According to the date it's a 6-07-87BE. Anyone know what the BE means? Also an idea of what Chevy truck it might have come out of for that year?

TIA
