Wow! I didn't see this coming... one of my favorite stations.

KWOD has been playing Alternative music for Sacramento since 1991. Those were the days before the term "Alternative" was actually coined by some supposed marketing genius somewhere. Then most people just called it Modern Rock and we played bands, like the Pixies, The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths and The Clash.

There have been many great years, like the explosion of the Grunge era and the creativity of the late 90's. There have also been many passionate and talented people sitting behind the microphones at KWOD, turning you on to new artists and songs, playing your favorites of the years past and letting you know about what was going on with those bands and the people like you, who loved them.

That is why it is so difficult to tell you that, after 18 years, KWOD is coming to an end. The last few years have been very challenging for KWOD; as it has been for the world of Alternative music, and the radio stations that play it, in general. The severe downturn in the economy over the last year has affected many people and companies. I'm not telling you something that you don't already know. But, perhaps you didn't know that, while we are a radio station, we face the same circumstances as so many other organizations today... the challenge of running a business profitably. We have taken many steps over the last few years to improve things, but in the end they have not been enough. We're proud of what KWOD has stood for over the years. And, we've had fun being part of it.

Some of you may want to blame this decision on some faceless corporation. While KWOD does have a parent company, it's not how it came down. This was a local decision that was both difficult and personal. We had to finally admit that our best efforts, over a number of years, were not going to produce the results we needed.

So, on Friday, May 22nd at 9am...KWOD will be no more.

Your loyalty to the music, and to KWOD, is more appreciated than any of us can effectively express. So, we will leave it with a simple, genuine "Thank you"...

Please e-mail your comments to: [email protected] or leave a message on our voicemail - 339-4220.

So what format are they going to, or are they just shutting down? :bananaguitar:

I'm kinda really psyched with the new station! It's a 90's only station... I've been listening to it already and it sure takes me back in the day.

I'm still bummed about KWOD, but The Buzz has turned out to be a pretty good replacement

Long Live Classic Rock!!! I've noticed Alternative in the mix of classic rock lately on the radio.

LOL! I wouldn't really call 90's classic, but it's the first time I've heard of a 90's only radio station - something I've been saying they need to come out with for awhile! It is now number 1 on my presets

Just admit it you're getting old, the 90's are now a classic rock station staple. :haha:

Well, Friday was the last day for KWOD...

FYI you can listen to 100.5 next time. It's similar to KWOD.

I had been listening to KWOD since I moved to Cali back in 1992! It was  great being able to switch between them and 98 Rock. One of my favorite DJs was Nick Monroe. He was a jerk to callers, but funny as hell! I was bummed when I heard this on the news last week :inthedark:  The new format  brings back memories from "the good ole' days."   Man I'm gettin' old :disturbed:

Yeah I would listen to 106.5 here and there but I think 98 rock is one of the best radio stations out there, they rarely play the same song twice in one day... still sucks though, I did listen to 106.5 on ocassion, definitely not a BAD station by any means. Just goes to show, this economic situation is going weed a lot of businesses out

Any guy who takes his woman wheeling enjoys her. A woman who is owned is left at home to cook, clean, and keep beer cold. So if this offends you you should stop looking and go have some tacos.    :rofl2: And a beer. If your old enough.   :beerchug:

  That sucks.  Obviously didn't listen to them much, but they were one of my favorites when I lived in Sac and when I drove through.

Agreed.  After listening to satellite radio terrestrial radio just sucks that much more!  If I forget my tuner at home when I go get the semi to head south (I have a base in the semi and in the shop) I will drive back home taking an extra 60 miles of drive time to get it...   Long live Sirius
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??
