I installed a Marlin rebuilt L52HD and it is very noisey in 4th gear. Some very slight noise in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th. I've got about 280 miles on it so far and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. I understand that it is rebuilt with the highest quality parts and the best trans tech  out there but, I'm not so comfortable with the noise. It's noisey on accel and decel. It goes away during a coast. Also, theres a strange vibration comming from it too. Got any ideas?

Stop driving it now,  I have a L52HD  and from day one its as quiet as a mouse,  i would think a thrust washer or something was missed as awesome as the trans tech is he IS human.

I wasn't mocking the trans tech at all. I was praising him. He has an excellent reputation. I'm just waiting for one of Marlin's staff to respond and tell me what to do. Thanks for the input though.

i would listen to glen. he is very smart and good friends with marlin as am i. i would also say stop driving it just in case it is a forgotten thrust washer or possably something on your side of the install. its just extremely good and extra insurance to stop driving it. i would drain your gear oil and look at your plug for access metal shavings. their will be a fair sized amount since it is a fresh rebuild but if you start seeing large chunks of metal. you definitely have an issue and i would call them up and have it repaired. it is very possable that he missed a piece, i highly doubt it but like glen said he's only human

hilux-1983

I have been talking to Jon in customer service. He had me send him sound and video of what it's doing. I did that just a bit ago. He didn't tell me to stop driving it though. Although, the noises are getting louder. I have about 490 miles on it now. I'm not looking forward to taking that thing out again, if they want me too. Can you post vids as well as pics on this site? If not vids then how do i post pics? thanks

I'm posting a link to the vid of the noise, at least I hope I'm doing it right. http://s683.photobucket.com/albums/vv199/hilux-1983/?action=view&current=Transmissionnoise1.flv  You have to turn your volume up to hear. Theres a lot of background noise from the motor, aggressive tires etc....

i can here it almost sounds like you dont have any gear oil in it like a metal humming noise

hilux-1983

Yup! I'm glad it's not just me being paranoid. It's full of gear oil though. That's why I'm concerned. I called as soon as I knew what I was hearing. It was immediate, right from the install. I just hate that I'm gonna have to take it out again. I sent the vid into customer service today. I haven't gotten a call or a response yet. I'll givem a call in the morning.

I totally forgot to post the the vid on the 2nd trans. You wont have to listen too hard once I put it into reverse. It made the "noise" as soon as I put in reverse to taker for a test drive. http://s683.photobucket.com/albums/vv199/hilux-1983/?action=view&current=Transmissionnoisereverse.flv  I was told it may be miss matched reverse gears  :dunno:

I just finished putting in and test driving #3. The shifting felt kinda loose and sloppy. Then going through the gears. 1st gear ok. 2nd gear ok. 3rd gear was making a knocking noise. Shifted into 4th, not bad. Then 5th, rev, rev, what? Dropped down into 4th gear and then into 5th again, rev, rev.................................. :hammerhead:

Ouch, that totally sucks. Kinda hoping my trans never goes bad now. Definitely some quality control issues with the trans rebuilds for some reason.

i bet you can toss that thing in, in five minutes by now.

I wish I could though. After I cleaned the heck outta the trans case, it leaks. I will be re-sealing it when the parts get here, probably around wed. I'll be putting a new gasket set along with Marlins HD eco-friendly seals.  :yesnod:
