i think i fried my altenator!!
« on: May 07, 2009, 09:25:03 PM »
i am degreasing my motor to do a timming chain so i cleand it by spraying it down with the heavy duty degreaser and water .  i ran the truck and it drove fine.  came back an hour later drove it and now the voltage is on the high side at idle.  when it revs out it will go to 18v  the battery light and brake! light will light up.

now, if i turn on my a/c and headlights the voltage will still climb with revs but the batt!! will not light up.

Im guessing i smoked the voltage regulator,  is the regulator internal or external on these 1985 year?

pretty sure it is internal.  take it off and take it to napa, they will check it for free.

It is likely that the alt is full of degreaser and grease.  I did the same thing on a truck I was restoring/modifying for sale a few years ago.  I pulled the alt, pulled it down and cleaned it up, but the damage had already been done.  Fortunately the PO had left the receipt/warranty for the alt in the glove box so I was able to exchange it for a new/rebuilt one.
