Gears for a 3.0 Toyota Four Runner Automatic
« on: Apr 20, 2009, 06:51:45 PM »
Does anyone know if you can get gears for a 95 automatic four runner transfer case? Anyone have any advice about the automatics or am I better off putting a manuel in it?

I think that you have a A340H transmission, I have heard that they lack power on step hills because the tranny and the case share the same fluid. A A340F does not share the fluid and doesn't have the problem. I don't know if your computer will run a A340F, however people do make stand alone shifters for them. I had a auto in my old 1997 4runner and liked it off road because it wouldn't stall off road, but if you have 4.7 or lower in the case you shouldn't stall much anyways.
So I guess it just depends what you want to drive.

They make adapters to put a gear driven case behind a A340F, then you can run 4.7 or even duals. My brother is doing something similar.

I would not put any money into the A340H.

Just make sure you have the right transmission for the adapter

so what is the deal with turtle points
basically its a form of Karma on teh forum. turtles used to popup and you would click on them and it wiould be a good turtle or bad turtle. when Bigmik updated teh forum it wouldnt allow turtles anymore. but turtle points still exist in a give and take system.

I think that you have a A340H transmission, I have heard that they lack power on step hills because the transmission and the case share the same fluid.
Basically if you have the A340H it is not a desirable transmission for off road use, and I would not put any money into it. :twocents:

A A340F does not share the fluid with the transfer case and doesn't have the problem, they also make adapters to run gear driven transfer cases behind it. I don't know if your computer will run a A340F to act like a normal auto, but I think they both have the same number of solenoids. People do make stand alone shifters for them. If you want a push button auto this would be worth putting some money into.

The A340H came in 1985-1995 4x4 Trucks w/v-6 and 1990-1995 4-Runner (4x4) according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_A_transmission#A340H
The A340F came in 1995-2003 4-Runner (4x4), 2000-2004 Tundra (4x4), I think they are behind the Tacoma also.

DO NOT JUST START BUYING PARTS!!!!!!!
Swapping in an A340F transmission is going to require a lot of research.
You need to make sure it will bolt up to a 3.0, if not do they make a bell housing that will allow it to.
You need to see if your computer will shift it.
Research it, and layout exactly what you want and make sure it will all work, then buy parts.

You might also want to look into a 3.4 engine swap it has more power, doesn't blow head gasket like the 3.0, and a A340F bolts right up to it.

If you're looking to swap in an A340F try to find one out of a 95 or earlier T100 (you'll need the ecu too). They're scarce, but are already passenger drop and were used behind the 3.0. The problem with the A340F in Tacomas and 3rd Gen Runners is the speed sensor, it's not compatible with the 3VZE ecu.

http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/autocrawler/index2.htm

Here's a pretty good link. Exact same swap you're talking about WITH the help of Marlin.

The A340F will bolt right up to the 3.0 or 3.4 block and I believe that your original cross-member can be used. There may be some driveshaft mods needed but the real beast is that speed sensor...
It was just crazy to see this deer leap all suicidal style off this embankment right in front of us.
