Toyota automatic any good???
« on: Nov 07, 2004, 03:50:16 PM »
There is an 1988 4-runner in fair condition close to where I live and they are asking $1500. It runs and drives great. I want to use this for a daily driver/trail rig, but It has an automatic tranny. Is the Toyota automatic tranny's any good? I like the V6 power this thing has but will the tranny hold up to mild to medium rock crawling. I have my comp buggy for extreem stuff but I miss driving my old 85 pick-up around.

Here is how I would like to build it, will the auto hold up?

SAS
3-4" lift
35" tires
Dual marlin t-cases

Thanks guys,

i belive u cant put a doubler behind a mini truck auto. i personally think that the autos in toys suck, not because of reliebilty but because they take so much from the truck. i would look towards something with a manual, even though the price sounds nice

So I can't put any kind of adapters onto the auto for dual cases or to install some gear cases behind the auto? If I can't, which manual tranny would swap in? I have a 1985 4 cyl w/5 speed. Would this tranny fit behind the 3.0 engine? Sorry for all the questions. I just don't have much knowledge with the 3.0's or toyota auto's.

Let's say I stay with the auto. Would the auto with the stock t-case hold up to wheeling with 35" tires if I geared the axles to 5.29??

The R150F 5 spd is the v6 trans which will bolt right in.

And the tranny from the 85 is a G52 or a G54 if it is carbed and it is a W56 if it is EFI and None of those will work.
87 runner, 4" trailmaster lift, 33" TSL/SX, 5.29's V6 e-locker, 22re that cost too much

hay i got a 85 runner 6in lift 35,s 5.29s and auto... i have never had a no props with mine .. iv , been running it for 2 years now ,con forcy , moab and a lot more trails ... i run 75 to 80 up 50 all the way to the con.. the only thing  that has happend to mine is that the
torq cunverter bolts broke  because the shop that did my eng.. only put 4 bolts in ... :smack:  i have no 4.1 gears or any thing in my truck. all do every line and hill that all my buds do with ther dual cases .. its just what you like better.. what is right for one is not right for the onter.. but you must put a big!!! tran cooler on it or it will over heat .. just my 2 cents
Jeeps are like tampons , every pu$$y  needs one.

Yeah you cant upgrade the old Toy auto the only autos from Toyota you can upgrade are the 95 and newer so if you re an auto fan  you could swap one of those in
1985 Toyota Pick/Up longbed...bobbed 15",  lifted 5", 36's.....http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=36992.0
