I'm gonna start building a sas 2nd gen 22re 4runner with dual 2.28 cases and 35's. I'm wondering what the popular consensus is as to which is better. I've read that some believe 5.29's are weaker. With all things considered such as streetability, strength, and mileage, what do you think is better. It will be locked of course. Bear in mind that I'm gonna wheel it but not flog it on sledgehammer. If this topic has been beat to death, I apologize and please send me to a good thread. Tanks yous guys.

5.29s are weaker but that being said Ive run 5.29s for 5 years with 37s locked f/r with dual cases and  pretty hopped up 22re and have never broken a thing. On road they were a little slow with 33s but with 35s you should be fine.  :twocents:

I've got nothing but 4.88's.

Probably due to me starting on 35" tires...  When I went to 37's I didn't feel a need to regear.  It's really not that bad.  It's no hot rod, but on the freeway with my 37's I'm at 2750 RPM doing 65 mph in 5th.  I don't think I'd be as happy with 5.29's for freeway driving.

Another thing to think about is, if you break on the trail it's going to be easier to find somebody with a spare 5.29 third than a spare 4.88 third.

I don't envision myself ever running 37's, and my commute is all of 3 miles. If I can roll down the freeway at 65, I'm cool with that.
It's not like when I lived in Cali and 80 down the 15 fwy was the norm. The speed limit on the freeway by my house is 60 :stopit:

Best way to look at it really is:

If you plan on running larger than 35s, 5.29s are the way to go.

If you don't plan on going above 35s, 4.88s are fine for you.

I would assume that most people that break 5.29's are running something bigger than relatively small 35's.

5.29's sound good to me. I plan to buy loaded thirds, does anyone offer cryoed gears in them? How much difference is there in strength?( any testing that is online would be an interesting read if anyone's aware of any)I set gears in my d44 and hated it, took forever cause I don't have the indicators or much experience at it.

My 4Runner has 35's and 4.88 gears.  It is adequate, but I'd love to have 5.29's on the street.

You say 65 in 5th @2750 with 37's and 4.88???

are you really doing 65 or is that what the speedo tells ya?    I'd like to know just in case I go to a 4.88. Currently I sit with 37 5.29 in 5th gear at 70mph Im at 3000RPM. Just sound to me like you haven't adjusted you speedo to compensate for the tires and gear. (not that you can on a toyota) 37's and 5.29 will get you really close to what the factory had the vehicle at when it rolled off the assembly. If you have 4.88 and 37's you are most likley going slow than the speedo tells you.

I think it will register slower than you are actually going. My speedo with 37s/4.88 is 4ish MPH slower than Big Mikes 5.29/37s
and at the same speed we are around 300rpm different, me being less. So, all in all it is not that big of a difference.

Speedometer reads like 59 mph.  I'm using my 65 mph estimate with one of those radar things on the side of the roads.  2750 RPM = 65 MPH for me.

Might not be exactly the same for you if you go to 4.88's, you also gotta figure in that not all 37's are created equal.  I think the Toyo MT's are a bit taller than MTR's.

Couldn't have said it better: short, simple, direct.

The way I always argue this is remember that a 35" tire is not really a 35" tire, or at least not for long. The old school notion was that 5.29s are the proper gears to correct your speed when running 35" tires. Well, this may be true for worn out 37s, but it's certainly not true for 90% of brand new 35" tires out there.

I installed 5.29s when I built my rig ONLY because I planned to run 37s.

When I had 35" MTRs, they had about 45% tread left and measured 33.5" -- no joke.

Of course no one would advise running 5.29s + 33s to "regain stock gearing relationships" but that is more likely the case as your 35" tires wear.

Therefore I recommend 4.88s if you NEVER plan to exceed a 35" tire. Otherwise you'll be dogging it around town as a result of running 37" or larger tires with 4.88 gears (speaking for the 22R-E here, even more so with a heavier vehicle like the 4Runner).

I never use strength comparison between the two as my source for persuasion.

If you are wondering how it will drive on the highway, I always ask what sort of terrain are you commuting in: Mountainous? Foothills? All flat land? Looooooong gearing sucks in the mountains when the jump from 3rd to 4th -- or even from 2nd to 3rd -- is night and day (think 4.88s + 37s + steep grades with lots of turns, you'd be stuck in 3rd gear the whole way up).

Thanks for the input. I never planned to run anything bigger than 33's on my Jeep, but you can guess how that ended up. Honestly, my commute is 3 miles on a road that has a 35mph speed limit, and 90%+ of my driving is in town (less than 45mph). 5.29's sound perfect.

I just got back from Monterey, Ca and I drove my truck down and back about 1430 miles round trip. I have 32" bfg ats and 4.88s. 65mph in my truck is right at 3000 rpm 70 is 3500rpm. Its my daily driver so around town its great but the freeway  and big hills suck, if I can cruise at 55 all day i'm ok lol. I live in Boise, Id so we went down through Jordan Valley where my upper rad hose sprung a leak, right before town thankfully. Drove on down through Reno and then hit Donner Pass, on the steep parts I was in 3rd gear pushing about 35 sometimes 40mph and getting passed by big rigs and busses  :turtle3: I have to say the slow lane is HORRIBLE! It felt like I was on a rough dirt road the whole way up. And just for the hell of it here's a pic at the rest stop at the summit....

Probably rode so ruff because the dog kept moving around in the back making the truck *unstable* !!       :P

the slow lane is trashed, full of cracks and stuff from all the big trucks, the other lanes didnt look bad but as slow as I was getting up the pass there was no way I was switching lanes lol. I had the cooler, some camping chairs, dog food and my lab mix along with my sisters 3 year old mastiff. We stopped at the Idaho/Oregon border cause the dogs needed a pee break. I think Jack the mastiff is the one staring at you.....
