Got on the site to research a build I'm thinking of, and really enjoy it. I've had 4 yotas. I currently have a 95 wrangler with spring over, d44/ford 8.8, high steer, locked,yadda yadda.Yeah yeah, I know. A jeep owner. But at least I'm comming around now, right. I've got a wife and 2 kids that I often take when I wheel, and jeeps kinda suck for 4 people. I find myself being nostalgic for another yota, so here's my plan.
2nd gen 4runner,sas,dual cases,35's,5.29's,leaves in the back,22re(cause I loved mine and didn't care for the 3.0)
I should have about 8k for the build, possible?
I know that 22re 2nd gens are a tad rare.
There is sooo much info on different rear axles, t-cases, trannies that I'm drowning.
Any tech input will be appreciated cause I need it.

You guys know a lot more than me, so am I correct in that a 2nd gen 4 runner 22re manual has the cool t-case for a 4.7 kit and a dual? Also, is the rear end cool or does it need a 6 cyl 3rd member? Compiling as much info as I can before I build 3 times (like b4)

uh..... I believe so on the trans part.
the rear part.... V6 Third is stronger yes.

Welcome, As long as the 4runner had lock hubs on the front stock it does have a gear drive case. A few came with ADD and a chain drive case in the late 80's.

long as it has stock manual lock hubs :thumbs:

you can also crawl under the rig and count the bolts on the rear of the case.

7 bolts on the rear case cover is RF1A (gear)
5 bolts on the rear case cover is VF1A (chain)

My next ignorant question: is the only difference between yota axles the 3rd member? In a 4 cyl 4runner is it necessary to upgrade the 3rds to v6? :help:(bear in mind a budget and the fact that I don't flog my rigs, but do use them)

which axles are you comparing? a 4cyl IFS and a V6 IFS? if so, then yes. the V6 is 4 pinion vs 2 pinion and has a larger pinion gear.

personally id find a TRD Elocker for the rear.
you can convert those over to a manual cable locker... making it even more reliable... (doesn't mess up in wet conditions)

I'm wondering about the 4 cyl. ifs rear. And I agree the e-locker would be the best, but they're kinda rich. Want to make sure I don't run out of dough before I run out of work. I guess if there's a significant strength difference, I better factor in a v6 3rd. The shafts are the same and don't need to be switched for the new 3rd?

the axle shafts are the same...
30spline.

all Toy 8in mini diffs are interchangable 4cyl, V6/Turbo, Elocker (based on the V6 diff)
