camshaft ID?
« on: Feb 02, 2009, 10:30:48 PM »
I was just sitting here looking at a receipt for the engine rebuild in 2005 that was in my 83 when I got it, theres also one from Marlin for a rebuilt L52 in Dec of 01 lol but anyways my question is how can I tell what cam is in my engine? the receipt says they put a comp cam with a part number of 87-119-4. 800-4500 RPM 252 dur .410 lift 110 lobe sep is the only info I can seem to find online. I know its no hotrod but it seems pretty gutless .

Thanks Glen, I figured you would know whats up lol I'd like to put a better cam in for sure. My truck had a weber 38 on it when I first got it and it was a read dog then, could barely squeeze 13 mpg out of it. So it doesnt matter that the cam you posted is for EFI?

yea I did that too but when you google it it come up on other sites as a comp cam, the rebuild was done in 2005 so I figured they dont sell that cam or use different numbers now.

I think i have that cam, its called a comp cams 252s (the s is intentional) if you can't find it i'll check the papers i have when i get home. deffinatly not a racecar cam lol. but i notcie a difference at low range rpm. especially with bigger tires. I can get you all the specs on it too.

here is the one i have. http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/CamDetails.aspx?csid=1226&sb=2 I have heard of an older grind, which yours might be,(my part number is different)specs on it. CC252S (2002 catalog): LC=110, D=204/204, Lift=409/409, LS=110, VL=10/10 where i found them http://forums.off-road.com/engines/223195-camshaft-profiles-22r.html unfortunatly i did not see a part number for that one. i didn't look too hard though.

COMP CAMS 87-119-4 TOYOTA 20R & 22R HIGH ENERGY 252S CAM, Camshaft, Solid Flat Tappet, Advertised Duration 252/252, Lift .410/.410, Toyota, Toyota 20R & 22R High Energy 252S Cam, TOYOTA L4 2.2L/2189cc 2.2 2189 1975 1980 Toyota 4-cylinder

is what I find when I google  87-119-4 comp cam nothing from the comp cams site pops up which is another reason I think its an older cam they dont sell anymore

yea  the 38 was  too much carb for the wimpie cam,

i dont like 38 webers because they open both sides at the same time,  this SUCKS because you have to jet them small in order not to flood it out at lower rpms under load

the 3236 doesnt open the secondary side till half throttle so you can run a slightly larger secondary jet

I havent pulled the top off the carb yet to see how its jetted but thats one of the things I want to check into before my springbreak roadtrip, I'll have to bug you about it when I do and see what you suggest.
