Tech of the Day - Front Axle Rebuild Tools
« on: Jan 30, 2009, 07:34:09 AM »
This is for the newbies, or anyone that wants to learn
What is the minimum amount of tools you can use to rebuild a front axle (not including the 3rd member)

Off the top of my head:

10mm Socket (or 13/32")
12mm Socket (or 15/32")
14mm Socket (or 9/16")
17mm Socket (or 11/16")
19mm Socket (or 3/4")
24mm Socket (or 15/16")
54mm Socket (2-1/8" equal)
Torque Wrench from 10-90ftlbs
2 Tubes White Lithium Grease
Lock Ring Plyers (or snap ring if you like frustration)
Seal Puller (or screwdriver)
Seal Driver (or socket of equal OD)
Flat head screwdriver (for flatening 54mm nut lock tabs)
Degreaser (brake cleaner, carb cleaner)
Rags
Jack Stand
Floor Jack
3/8" Chain with hooks (to hold up the axle if you are using a Hi-Lift Jack)
Lug Wrench (or 13/16" 6 point deep socket with 12" extension)
Factory Service Manual (free download on this site)

Don't know off hand what size the socket is for the fill and drain plugs, so if somebody could come up with that, it would be great.

Anything else to add?

What about that pre-load guage to make sure the knuckles have the right pre-load. . . . I know you said the minimum amount of tools, but I wouldn't want to have to add/remove shims later because of wobble. . .

Set the Assembly on an old wheel (or some other block) and take out the 2 bolts connecting them, then pound out the studs, after that it should be fairly easy to separate.

You should replace them anyway, but no, put your lugnuts on flush with the top of the stud first, use a piece of wood between your lug and hammer.

WTF do you need 2 tubes of lithium grease for?  Packing the knuckles full of grease is retarded.  Just fill the birf and smear some on the outside unless you really like dealing that a mess WHEN not if the inner seal fails....

Oh and a knuckle rebuild kit would come in handy when rebuilding teh axle too...
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??
