Fuel tank options?
« on: Jan 29, 2009, 01:18:29 PM »
I was possibly looking to swap out my low hanging fuel tank in my 4runner and 1st gen pickup for a one that would fit in between my framerails where the spare tires fit.

Back in auto shop in High School, I knew a kid with an early 80s F250 Ford with a 19 gal fuel tank in between the framerails in the very back of the frame.

Has anyone had any experiance withany type of low profile tanks between the framerails?

Im just trying to explore my possibilities here.

Heres a pic of a 19 gal fuel tank that fits between the framerails from a 1984 Ford F250 with a 7.5L

I can measure it for you when i get home. Its just a rear tank from a 92-96 F150. Im using the factory fuel pump and sender(autometer guage to read correctly) I got the factory mounts too and bolted it to my frame crossmembers which obviously not stock. check out lmctruck.com for new repro parts. I got my stuff from a junkyard for about 50bucks.

If you have an Toyota Truck not Tacoma, then your stock tank will fit between the rails behind your axle.

I know a few people have used Downey's for a spare tank.  Not cheap, but might give ya some ideas.

That's me!!!

I used the stock rear tank from an early 90s F-150. I used the Ford pump and sender, and wired into the stock Toyota wiring. I love it! It's awesome. I humped some rocks with my frame that would've DESTROYED the stock saddle bag tank. I'd recommend this tank, especially in a truck. I put it up as high as I could without cutting into the floor. There's more pics in my buildup. Let me know if you have questions!

After seeing how clean Dustins install looked i opted to do the same 92-96 19 gallon f150 tank and am glad i did it. Fits perfect back there and the factory ford pump works good. I bought my tank and straps from lmc for like $120 and the pump and sender i went to the dealer which was like $150 but i trust the factory parts more than the autozone stuff. I do plan to build a 3/16 skidplate under mine since the tanks are pretty thin.

I want to know everything it took to make it work so I can avoid down time solving problems. It looks great. I am definately doing this to make room for 4-link just need to build confidence in being prepared. Does fuel guage still work? Is your truck EFI like mine?

Hey,

I used a 1991 rear tank from an F150. It had the 6cyl engine, and the pump works great. I thought my pump died the other week, but I pulled it out and it works like a charm (coil igniters... Terrible troubleshooting on my part...)

I'm not sure of the wiring colors, but there are four wires to work the pump and fuel gauge. I just followed the wires, did a little deducing, and figured it out. You can splice in a short section of 4-wire trailer wire. That keeps it pretty clean.

The fuel gauge will read backwards - empty will be full, vice versa. However, when I pulled the pump this last time I bent the arm 180*, so hopefully it will read correctly now. I haven't tried it out.

You will need some lengths of fuel line to splice from your hard line to the fuel sending and return. You'll also need to figure out a way to fill the tank. I just used some exhaust tubing to go from the factory fill to a modified inlet on the Ford tank. I cut up my Toyota tank's inlet and welded / soldered / JB welded it onto the Ford tank.

Read the pirate link posted earlier in this thread for more information. Also, look at the rest of the pictures in my photobucket to see how I mounted the tank. It makes use of the Ford factory straps, an additional rear crossmember, and some work coming off the factory round tube a little in front and above the rear axle.

You'll love this mod. One of my best mods to date!
