22RE Throttle
« on: Jan 10, 2009, 08:55:08 PM »
I don't really know how to explain this but here goes.... My engine is too responsive, it is either at idle or ~2500rpm between no throttle and 10% throttle but after that it is totally normal. It's a stock 1985 22RE with a new TPS. The truck was an auto but now a manual, if that helps. I re-set the TPS too retard the throttle but that only pushed the rpm jump back.
I want it setup so the throttle is very gradual and consistent.  :help: What can I do?

If it helps, I think my engine runs hot. It fouls plugs in about 10k miles. My current compression is 140-150psi and even threw all cylinders.

is your temp gaude aways reading hot? those plugs look bad. as far as the throttle, is the pedal smooth?

Temp gauge does not read hot, unless 1/3 to almost 1/2 is hot. The petal is smooth and throttle is smooth after ~10% throttle. Before that it is like steps; idle and mid-high rpm.

it could be the throttle cable. or maybe the throttle body is a little sticky or gumed up. does your engine ping?

I don't know about the ping but I replaced the throttle cable a while back because it was sticky. It was a used one from ToyConnection, I will check it. I regularly carb-spray the throttle body (~5k mi).

I had my valve set at .07in and .11in for a while but I went back to .08 and .12, now I get a lot of ticking noise. No pining.

I'm still having this problem. The truck jerks a LOT and it is enough for me to worry about things. The throttle does not stick and I am turning the TPS back to where it was.

The "ticking" in the valve train is normal for the 22r engine. It is because the valve train does not have any hydraulic "coushion" (like a hydraulic lifter) to keep everything snug throughout the temperature range of the engine. If you do not have the ticking, it is possible for the rocker arm to "walk" sideways and end up pushing on the spring keepers, possibly popping the keeper off and dropping a valve.

When you say it "jerks", do you mean like a miss when accelerating? a stumble at cruise? or something happening while it's idling?
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Build it, break it, fix it, repeat until your wallet is empty.

The jerk/jump is, as best I can describe it, a throttle spike.  If I am sitting at idle, I compress the accelerator the RPMs don't do much until I reach ~1/2" compressed (normal), then the RPMs jump to like 2000-2500 and the same when it comes down. The real problem is when I drive; if I am coasting with a very light petal (no acceleration), as the truck slows or reaches a point where the throttle and RPMs are at that weird match it jerks (like letting the clutch out to fast) and the same for the opposite, at that point if you increase the throttle to give the engine a little push, it will jerk forward. It is real annoying and I feel possibly damaging. The closest thing I can relat it too is popping the clutch, both in accelerating and decelerating.  :help:

i think i had a similair problem. whne ur on the gas it feels like it almost boggs but then jumps in rpms?? well thats what my 85 was doing. i changed the tps and took the whole intake off. it was caked in oil. after that it ran alot better. i adjusted my tps and made sure the conecters where good. i also cleaned the egr valve and hooked up the lines that where off of it. it run alot better. maybe it will help u out in finding the problem.
When in doubt throttle out!

I re-re-adjusted my TPS and the jerking is gone but the RPM jump is still there. I will look into cleaning the inside of the intake (when it stops raining).
Could this be from old or a bad vacuum lines? Or a bad mechanism in the system (how could I clean it)?

after i put the tps in a did all the vacum lines so ya maybe that would be  a good start. just go get some vacum hose from ur auto parts dealer. not that hard to do just mark the lines and do one at a time.

is the truck throwing any codes? My truck was doing this last month and it was cus my knock sensor cable came off, and my spark plugs looked exactly like that too a month before. The plugs may be like that because you are either using bad gas or your valve seals are leaking. I changed the plugs and the valve seals when I did my head gasket last month, but I havent checked my plugs since I changed them.
