Mitsubishi Eclipse... what should I know?
« on: Dec 30, 2008, 08:59:51 PM »
So I have been looking at cars lately. Smaller cars for use as a DD. I am interested in Mitsubishi Eclipses. I would probably be looking at a 95-99 also known as 2nd gens. Does anyone have any experiences with these cars? I found a 97 GST (turbo charged front wheel drive) auto with 90,000 miles for $3500, and figured that was a pretty good price. I just wanted to research the cars more before I looked into them more seriously. Thanks for any info you guys/gals can give. I am aware of a crank walking problem, but I don't know much about these cars besides that.

As long as you have the money to fix it a lot, go for it  :gap:  The ONLY way you could get me in one of those cars is if it was an awd model or I got one dirt cheap.

You should def get a scooby car.

X2,

They can't even make good forklifts, the one we have at work is a POS. No one ever wants to use it. Really, who designs a forklift that you can barely even see dead ahead of you while operating??

I wouldn't bother with anything Mitsubishi.

At the risk of "killing" another one of your threads...

My parents had a 92 Mitsubishi Galant and it had some strange issues that made we wonder about the way the cars were designed.  The radio had issues and the dealership removed it temporarily while waiting for parts and it caused the intermittent wipers to stop working.  Also, at one point you could turn on the dome light by shifting your weight in the passenger front seat.  It was almost like the wiring harness was a metal block and everything was linked.  Overall I wasn't very impressed and would agree with the previous comment that they are the worst of the Japanese manufacturers.

I have no specific Eclipse experience other than I agree that they look great.  You have to remember that it is the same car as the Plymouth Laser and the Eagle Talon, just different trim levels were available depending on the brand.

It is, but they're re-badged with the plymouth and eagle names and are still mitsubishis.  A lot of their issues early on was that they'd pack the cars with lots of neat little features and gadgets, but the r&d and engineering wasn't there to keep the dependability of those up.  Too much too quick.  I think the only things they've done well enough were trucks and home electronics!

As far as the engine goes, you can get either the mitsu or a dodge engine.  Depends on if you get the turbo car or the regular.  The dodge engine is the turbo engine, which is the predecessor to what dodge uses in the neon and part time cruiser turbo cars.

Mitsubishi trucks, like the mighty max, aren't that bad.  Now the Mitsubishi raider, that truck is a turd, just like it's donor, the dodge Dakota.  Mitsubishi has already killed production of the raider.  Thank goodness.

Did I also mention that dealer level information for Mitsubishi vehicles in general is almost non existent?  When you do finally unearth it, you can't understand it because it's a direct translation from Japanese to English.

Is that the early 9,000 rpm motor or the later 8,000 rpm motor?
