85 Toy need to pull trany to work on transfer case??
« on: Dec 14, 2008, 03:57:05 AM »
I've got some play in my output flange for the rear drive. At a minimum I need to replace the rear bearing. I don't want to pull the whole damn transmission. How far can I go into the transfer case without pulling the transmission. Any info is much appreciated!!!

Here is a link to the FSM for the T-case. You will also find instructions on Marlins web page under tech.

http://www.lukemiller.org/toys/1985_toyota_4cyl_transfer_case_FSM.pdf

You can do it with it installed in the rig or you can leave the tranny in and just pull the T-case.

I was wondering because my 85 FSM says to pull the trany to work on the transfer case. Looking at the pics it looks like you can just take the transfer case shifter off and unbolt the transfer case, slide it back it's out. This sound right? Couldn't get on to that site you listed.

No, you do not need to pull the trans just the case. You will have to support the trans and drain it.

That's great to know  Thanks for the info guys, now I can do a complete job on the transfer once I have it on the bench. I changed to a one piece driveshaft years ago and the shaft always vibrated a little. Pretty sure it wore some bearings out because this truck can't have more than a couple hundred off road miles on it. Hopefully it will be an easy fix.

Have you checked the nut on the flange? make sure it's not backed off? mine did that.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

Yeah, it's still got the factory stake job on the nut and hasn't moved. Still, I'll double check it after I pull the driveshaft. Thanks for the tip.

mine was staked too. butt still was loose. I mite have a t/case rebuild coming my way some time. butt that was about 3 years ago now. when I say it was loose, I mean that the nut was not hard on the flange. the nut did not want to move cuze it was staked.

4 12mm bolts hold the shifter base on, 8 14mm bolts&nuts hold the driveshafts on, 6 14mm bolts hold the tcase to the tranny and 4 14mm bolts hold the tcase to the crossmember.

support the back part of the tranny with a rachet strap around the frame and under the tranny or with a jack stand.
drain both the tcase and tranny, they share fluids... just make sure you oull both drain plugs.
take the drive shafts off, shifter off.
the ubolt the 6 bolts holding it to the tranny and then the 4 holding it to the crossmember and then pull it off.

VIOLA! there you have it, its off and you can work on it.
its super easy.
reverse to put it on.
also its easy to fill the tranny/tcase through the shifter cavity.
its 2.5-2.7qts to fill both I believe.
