4-5spd crossmembers
« on: Dec 04, 2008, 08:02:59 AM »
i have a 79 toyota which came stock w/ the L43 4 speed and upgraded to a g-series 5spd w/ dual cases.... now i have yet to see one but does anyone make a dual case crossmember for 5 speed transmissions to 4 speed trucks ??? cause i know the mounting for the crossmembers on 4 speeds are farther forward cause of the shortness factor.

not just the 4 speed, all 79-83 trucks had the short tranny,  and used the same crossmember.

budbuilt makes a cross member designed for what you are doing,

arent the 4 speed trannies and 5 speed g-series the same lenght anyways. my swap bolted into the existing holes  :dunno:...im prety sure any aftermarket crossmember such as budbuilt's would bolt right up.

with a g series tranny i think you need to run a gen 1 dual case crossmember and u-bolts over the frame or weld some new mounts. I'm putting an r series together soon, and i know I'm going to have to get creative with the crossmember. I'm going to try a budbuilt cross member with u-bolts and maybe weld some supports later after i get it all settled in. g-series is longer i'm pretty sure. did the old crossmember bolt right up to the frame? the 4 speeds use from 79 to 83 4x4 were the l43 and the l45. the 5 speed was the l50 and l52 4x4 to 83 . and i believe the g54 was out in 84.

L43 4 speed --->

L45 4 speed  L50 5 speed and in 83, the L52 5 speed --->

all the above trannies are the same length and will bolt in with only small mods to the floor pan

well when i did the swap to 5 speed w/ single case i tried using the old crossmember but it didnt work so i fabbed a crossmember then i went to dual cases and fabbed another crossmember now im just looking for a budbuilt style to go to my factory crossmember mounts to my 5 speed... maybe i will just buy a budbuilt and do the ubolts over the frame

the gseries was like 4 inches longer.
