to save money or something? it seems inefficient and way to weak for its own good. sorry its been pickin at me for sometime.

Ramrod

because its way better driving and riding and handleing for the average person not trying to crawl there cars

Yota-Freak

ive been in a SFA...handles just the same i thought....=(

Ramrod

they dont handle bad but i bet your grandma doesnt want to drive one

Rocksurfer

It's that Cadillac ride, can't beat it. Sadly only 1% actually use the 4wd in their vehicle more than once or twice so to make them ride better they went to IFS.

well not my grandma...shes a spoiled brat..lol. still has the mentality i mean...but if u figure the older generation drove big ass chevy's and ford's with no power steering, non syncro gearing...no power brakes, just fine=) yeah i almost bought that sfa...but the guy uses it has his DD cuz gas was so expensive..and two dualies isnt cheap driving.

ya they did live with it and as those older people grew up they wanted things more comfortable, try driving a old sfa truck with no power steering, no power breaks, blah blah and then hop in a new chevy truck.  Ya thats why they have ifs, same reason they made computers and calculators, modernization

Yota-Freak

hahaha..i guess. so if i have enough money...next summer im doin a SAS...my dad's done 14 of em....hes done each one in a day=) he said my truck isnt worth it...so i told him to teach me to weld...it changed his mind..he was proud..lmao

Better on-road performance...handles better on-road and rides smoother, but not near as heavy duty, and junk when it comes to going over bigger objects such as downed trees and good sized boulders

That's why all the Formula 1 cars use solid axles, 'cause they handle the same...oh, wait!
The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those who got there first.

I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.

IFS does not handle better on the road!  My 80 can rail the corners compared to an ifs rig, I've checked  :gap:

Doesn't hurt to know the road intimately and be a bit of a wild man...

At the risk of oversimplifying...  IFS greatly reduces the unsprung weight up front, resulting in a smoother ride with better control.  On less than perfect pavement, the shocks don't have to work nearly as hard, and the tires spend more time on the road and less time bouncing off of it.  IRS gives the same benefits out back (usually on more spendy vehicles).
My goal in life is to be as a good a person as my dog already thinks I am.

If you don't learn something every day, you're not paying attention.

my 1980 handles like a go cart, thats a good thing

well im just sick of mine..lmao

Toyota invented IFS so all those old solid front axles wouldn't fill up junk yards and harm the environment.  :gap:
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

:dunno: why?  If you develop your wheeling skills, you'll find it doesn't limit you nearly as much as you think it does.

There is more to "handling" than just grip.  Your live axle keeps the tires square with the road even if the body leans, while a typical IFS setup will let the tires roll over into positive camber as the vehicle leans.  That reduces the contact patch and consequently reduces grip.  The cure is a more aggressive camber curve and more roll stiffness, but the camber curve plays hell with things when you're not cornering, and increasing roll stiffness end up...well...sort of riding like a live axle vehicle  :_oops:

Live axles are fine for going fast on a dead smooth road with no significant bumps.  Throw a few potholes or severe elevation changes in there and watch that unsprung weight bounce you right into the ditch...

Nate, I still need to get you behind thee wheel in the MR2.  It's a whole different world.  And, thanks to low unsprung weight, it doesn't become a pinball if it hits a little wiggle in the pavement.

Aaaaaand that's the end of the discussion.
