i dont know what to do? plz help
« on: Oct 18, 2008, 11:49:35 PM »
im so frustrated im going insane

i put a used engine in my truck with about 10k on it. Rebuilt the carb and replaced almost everything you could think of other than internal components. i.e. fuel pump, vaccum lines, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and alot more.

for the first 1,000 miles i had no problems. Then WHAM its like someone is messing with me just for fun.

major problem #1 truck misses when cold, its very bad and winter is almost here. but when it warms up it is perfect.

major problem #2 it started leaking oil like it was put together without gaskets. and it was from everywhere.

i pinpointed and fixed several leaks, valve cover gasket, fuel pump gasket, distributor o ring, main seal, pan gasket, trans rear output, and more i think i cant remember.

now i think its coming from the timing chain cover. because the leak is in the front of the engine and its not coming from above the head.

so if it is the timing chain cover, than to replace it i either have to drop the pan or pull the head.

PLz some tell me if im crazy with this next theory?
back to prob#1

In those first 1000 miles i overheated due to a clutch fan going out. i got up to 250, yeah i know thats bad but when it cooled i fixed the fan and everything seemed fine. for about two weeks, then the stumble (major prob #1 started.

could i have damaged my head gasket minorly so that when its cold it does not seal perfectly but once it warms up the metal expands and in turn sealing it up and runnig good.

so if im going to replace the timing chain cover gasket, than ive gone thriugh the work of getting everything off and apart. so i might as well replace the timing chain right?

and if i pull the head to do so, i wll have to replace the head gasket, and maybe resurface the head.

this will take a good deal of money and time

so should i just break down pull the engine out and completly rebuild the whole thing or what?

i just dont know what to do? :rivers:

With that many miles on a rebuild and it leaking like it was, I'd say your best bet would be to do a tear down, just to double check everything.  And then fix everything that needs attention.  It may be a pain now, but for long term trouble free mileage it's cheap insurance.

Good luck.

another thing,  you blew the oil seals because the headgasket blew in just the right spot that its building too much pressure in the crank case

new headgasket will fix this

LC Engineering has good kits and pricing.  I have their dual row kit in two of my yotas.

Are you gonna have the bottom of your head surfaced just to be sure?

if you have the 84 block ie tall block,  then get the timing kit for a 20R or 80-82 22R (double row chain and other components)

Have you seen many Toyota 22r valve covers? Hard to tell from your avatar, but you may have an older engine, or at least valve cover. Yours looks kinda rounded. The 79-83's are much more rounded than the later models...I know there's another way to tell...some Saturn shape on the side of the block, but I don't remember which one has it and which doesn't. Someone else may chime in. Or search "which engine do I have" or something like that...can't quite remember what the thread was.

well the valve cover is off of my 84 original engine i cleaned it up and put it on cause it looked alot better.

but yes i want to say in 1985 or 6 they switched to the square cover,

the only reason im confused on witch engine i have is because it is out of and 1984 2wd fuel injected truck fuel injection was an option then. i diddnt even know that until i looked at the vins off the truck it came out of and sure enough oct/1983 22r-ec

but the engine may or may not been original i should of  checked the vins and now i cant get to em. all i know is that this engine was rebuilt 10k ago but i dont know if its original.
