Front Brake Upgrade - Is it worth it?
« on: Sep 18, 2008, 07:11:10 AM »
I need to do some work on the front brakes on my 89 4Runner with 85 front axle and it may be as simple as brake pads and possibly turning the rotors.

I am considering upgrading to the Marlin V6 IFS Calipers and Vented front Rotors.  I like the idea of maximizing stopping power, but how much difference will the upgrade really make?

fwiw i never have rotors turned because your just removing material that  makes the brakes more prone to over heat

the larger calipers  and new rotors  will make a noticeable difference,  i would also get the FJ80 master cylinder as well

I agree with this.  In terms of stopping power that would help a lot.

On past trucks I've done I have put the IFS calipers with the FJ vented rotors.  I didn't notice a huge difference but it was better.  I think with the larger master cylinder you'd see a significant difference in brake performance.  My friends FJ40 that had full width axles and 42" IROKs has the FJ80 master cylinder and he can lockup his tires with 1 ton brakes.  Thats stopping power.

Next question:

Since the 4Runner is an 89 how does the master cylinder rate?  It was designed to go with the larger rear drums and the 4cyl IFS calipers?

my biggest reason for the vented rotor upgrade is just that.  Better heat dissipation from the rotor to help keep it from warping.  Death wobble from warped rotors is no fun

I'll probably upgrade when this new (ordered) set of pads wears out.  I have no indication that my rotors are warped and I'm spending the money on Rancho 9000XL shocks for the front since there is only so much cash to go around.

Vented rotors help stop brake "fade". the V-6 cals have bigger pistons. so a little more stopping power. butt not a hole lot. I did it for the fade thing. I run my truck heavy.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

yeah, it must be lame to drive a Ford. And all the while you have a Yota, all that potential just sitting there day after day in the garage.... :therethere:

the ford works fine, that is what i am driving every day....... the toyota is what isnt working, and its not parked in the garage, its on the street, all that potential is fien and great, too bad it blew the engine..... i dont have the time or the money to screw with it --- so it will continue to sit until the time i can afford it and have have the time, or it gets towed away ---- sometimes, life comes first
