Towing with an 08 Tundra?
« on: Aug 17, 2008, 05:43:04 PM »
Planning on buying an 08 Tundra dcab 5.7 engine. I'll be towing a jeep at least once a week. What do you all think?
Thanks  EHCATL

Tows great, when I tow my rig & trailer, I barely touch the gas to keep it cruising. I have the supercharger on there now, and you don't even notice the trailer behind you, even going up long grades.
The gas mileage is way better than when I was towing with my old tow rig (91 F350 w/460) that was built up by the previous owner with parts he got from Banks.
Last year, Mark from MetalTech shop & I were both towing basically the same vehicles & similar trailers from the SEMA show in Vegas to Pismo for the Surf & Turf event, and on a long steep grade, he asked how much I was pressing on the gas (1/8 to1/4) and he told me he was floored the whole way up the grade in his early 2000s F250 diesel

You'll be fine.. check out my tow rig! I pull this load all over the mountains. The 6 speed and brakes on both trailer axles is the only way I'd even think of it in a Taco though.

I will have this load on the Tahoe side of the trail for MCR. I'm hunting for a Tundra myself though because the Taco hates me for pulling that trailer up grades. Suprisingly though I average 11.5-12mpg pulling this load. I'd be surprised if the 5.7 got that pulling the same trailer. Being able to pass everything on the road going over Donner would sure be nice though!

my 08 tundra pulls my junk really easy, im real light on the skinny pedal and can get 15 on the highway with my rig behind it. and get 20 empty. the 5.7 has plenty to get a trailer and a rig down the road. 381 hp out of the box, thats unheard of.

I don't know anything about your rig...but my '07 tundra 4wd with 5.7L gets 9 mpg pulling my fj55 and trailer.  Hell, I only get 16mpg around town and 17 mpg on the interstate averaging 72-75mph....

When it comes to towing and fuel mileage one key thing to remember is if you have to climb those hills with the throttle wide open you are going to suck a lot of fuel compared to cruising up a hill and not pushing it too hard. It will make a big difference in your mileage even though it may take an extra hour to get to your destination. Plus your engine and trans will like you for a much longer time. I used to have one of those gauges that told you everything the vehicle was doing like direction, mileage, outside temp, etc, etc. So I reset it at the bottom of the Cajon Pass and then in tow drove it hard up the pass. Then I drove back down and reset it then drove up again but this time just cruised up the hill not stressing out anything. I was amazed at the difference in mileage, I went from 7mpg to almost 13 just by changing my driving style.

My son-in-law still loves towing with his Tundra, it is a very stable platform.
