rusty frame
« on: Aug 12, 2008, 04:37:22 PM »
hey guys im new on here, but i have an 85 yota that im in the process of putting the marlin crawler 4" spring kit with hysteer and all that good stuff. i live in maine and my frame is junk frome the rear of the cab back. it is at a local shop and they said to find another truck with the same frame and chop the rear half off, so what years are the frames the same? or has anybody built a new rear section just out of tube stock? or plated but they said its to bad to plate. i can post picks if you want.

You can cut out what is bad and weld in a new section. Or you can replace it all. There was a guy on here at one point in time that built prefabbed partial frames from the cab back. I wish I could find the pics of his setup, but I don't even know where to begin. I guess you could cut it out of another truck, but why do that when you can just make a new partial frame out of new material? If you don't want to build a cab back frame, then I would not plate, if you mean just welding a plate over the rusty parts. I would cut out the rusty parts and weld plate in where the rusty parts were. :twocents:

I've done both. On my 85 crawler I used 2x3, and 2x4x3/16wall box tube which fit inside the stock frame and built all new to my liking. On my 86 extra cab I also used 2x box tube slipped inside the front and rear section of the frame. I did this to shorten my frame to essentially make a short wheelbase extended cab. The only reason I decided to even reuse the rear half of the stock frame on the 86 was becouse I am putting a bed back on this one and didn't want to fab bed mounts, besides it will look like a stock frame when all is done.

I drilled numerous holes in the frame where the new tube went inside and plug welded for the most weld surface and strength.

It wont be the weak point if you know what you are doing when you build a new frame for it

I found a bad rust hole by the gas tank on my 86 toy. Here are some pics of how I fixed it.

For the rest of the rust I ordered and applied a rust converter called "1" Step by Interstate Products, Inc.

Good luck with the rust issues. Holler if you need any more info on how I did what I did to fix mine.

I used to repair big rig trailer frames. Whenever you run plates on the frame, you do not want the ends at 90 degrees to the frame. It will promotes cracking. You want the ends angle cut or V-cut. This applies to any plateing on a frame.
