tube door mods . . .
« on: Jul 22, 2008, 02:58:38 PM »
I just mounted a set of tube doors (as seen in my build thread) but I figured I’d start a new thread to get some ideas about mounting mirrors and speakers. Here are some pics of the setup . . .

For mirrors, I’m thinking about going with these . . . .

http://www.mooreparts.com/store/product/1645/AC857815/

They seem to be the cheapest bar-mounted mirrors I can find for 1.5” tubing. The only thing I don’t like about them is that they don’t fold in. Of course, I could just take them off before hitting the trail but I like having a mirror on the passenger side so I can see my rear-passenger tire and bed on tight turns. . . . Anyone know of a better solution? . . .

For speakers, I think I may need to mount a plate on the bottom front of the tube door to mount the speakers. I saw these doors from Schaffer Offroad . . . .

I’m trying to see if I can get a set of just those plates that cover the hinges. Perhaps I could work off of them for speaker mounts . . . Anyone have other ideas? Thanks.

get some universal mirrors from walmart, NAPA, whatever.  the base that bolts to the vehicle will allow the mirror to rotate in any direction, so you can use sheetmetal screws and mount them to your doors, or cut a small (4" or so) section of square tubing, weld it to the existing door at the point where you want the mirror, and mount it to that, if you don't want to drill into the doors.  With the mirror on there, the base will cover the tubing, and it'll look pretty clean.  Them are some pricey mirrors!! :yikes:  I just clicked the link :gap:  the ones I'm talking about are 6-8 buckes a piece.

What about motorcycle/dirtbike/atv mirrors?  Have you looked at those?  mabye they'll have something with a clamp like that, that does fold it :dunno:

As for the speakers, thats gonna be a PITA.  You'll have to build a "box" for the speaker, to protect the backside from mud/dirt/rocks/water/dust/etc.  and the wiring.   And of course, doing a box like that is gonna look kinda goofy IMO :dunno:

Let me know if you can get those plates, I wouldn't mind buying a set of those as well...

I just put little plates, on my doors, to accept the stock mirrors.

Sorry no closeup

Yes, the stock mirrors fold in

My speakers are boxes behind the seat.

are those "plates" pieces of the doorskin that match the bodylines? is that handle on the shifter for throttle control? do you still use the foot throttle? how do you sync both? :hammer: :hammerhead:

The truck your refering to is from the shaffers website. A hand throttle is used in addition to the foot throttle...they both pull the throttle on the carb.  Hit the hand throttle and youll notice the gas pedal drop...theres no syncing to do, its actually a really easy mod.

the problem with the door mount mirrors you are looking at is when you flop you loose the mirror..... I have done it twice now.... It is simple to remove but it is a useless size allen key that I normally don't carry. I am planning on getting a motorcycle type mirror for the future........ that way I will have a pass side mirror as well.

as for mirrors, my dad has tube doors on his jeep and he just went down to the local bike shop and looked around and found a cheap mirror with a tube mount.
as far as speakers go, i have a boat amp under my seat wired to two 4" pioneers in the front and two 6" pioneers mounted right above the seat belt mount behind the seat and i get more then enough sound from those. its a bit of a pain to get the holes cut for the back ones but it was well worth it.

I dunno, mine are phillips #2, and take 30 seconds a side.  I have a phillips on my leatherman, as well as tool when I wheel.  Then I just swap them to the full doors, in a couple if mins.

back from the dead..

I found an old set of FJ40 mirrors and arms that I mounted to my tube doors, swivel up out of harms way when wheeling, pull them down for driving. Works great....finally!
