waht is the difference between a parts cleaner and a solvent? i know b12 chemtool has a gallon sized something... isnt that the same stuff as their aerosol carb cleaner? (their carb cleaner works really well)

since my dad has shot down all real solvents, i guess I have some searching to do. The super clean looks pretty good, as does the simple green or some kind of citrus cleaner.

I think i will probably end up with the super clean.

Duffil

super clean foams in a tank.

I favor the simple green with gloves because it won't kill plants or cause problems with your skin or immune system.  Oh - the stuff works 10x better if it's very hot(note - this sends out insane amounts of vapor - a mask is recommended).  I've been known to get it really hot in an old stock pan and dump it right on full strength for those impossible jobs.  Note - even 120F is more than enough to double its strength.

The orange stuff is more for tar and varnish, though - stuff that isn't going to come clean with simple grease cleaner.

The Castrol Super Clean is similar.  I just get whatever one is safe for storm drains/septic systems/etc and is on sale - they all work about equally well.

I went to checker and bought some of this stuff. It safe on pretty much anything, but will still cut through grease/oil/loose carbon. I hope it works well. It was $35, and i am going to mix it at 1:1 with water.

Oil eater is pretty much the same thing as super clean or purple power...  It'll work just as well.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

If you can figure out some way to heat up the water, I think it will clean faster.............

(Do they still make those immersible heaters you'd dunk into a cup to heat things up?)

The Oil Eater brnad has its own parts washers that they sell, so i figured this stuff would be just fine in my tank. It does bubble up if you take the shelf out and let it hit the standing cleaner. With the shelf in, it bubbles very little. I cleaned all of my front axle parts with the stuff today mixed 1:1 with water. It works just fine. It is not as powerful as real solvent, but it sure beats the hell out of buying cases and cases of brake clean and sitting on my ass with a scrub brush and a rag. Now I just put the parts in the tank, let them sit 10 minutes, use my cleaning brush to knock stuff loose, wash with the flexable hose, dunk in water, then set aside to dry. Much easier, and I can charge people to use this.

Here is the tank i bought incase anyone is wondering:

This is after I took out a lot of the surface gunk. As you can see, there is still a lot of surface gunk (the lighter colored stuff) floating on the cleaner. Yes, the cleaner was clear before I started.

Like someone said, it's all about the heat. We use a water-based parts washer at work and it works great when it's very hot. We have a "real" solvent tank too but thats for electrical only according to the EPA- i.e. we will get fined if caught using it for anything buy cleaning electronics. I don't mind the water based tank much, some suck but not the one we have. Oh yeah just be careful with aluminum, if you leave it soaking in some cleaners it will turn black.
