well, since the 1 tons are the new cool thing i thought i would one up it.  kyle really needed some 1 tons and i was just looking for something to do so i picked up some cheap deuce and a half axles in Sutter this afternoon.

the plan is to unbolt the 1 tons and sell to kyle and bolt in the rocks.  thats all.. . . . right. . . i keeping the leafs because they work.  ill be running full hydro again.  the rocks are getting Screaming Seaman pinion brakes, passenger side histeer arm for the ram, Screaming Seaman wheel centers, axle boot gaurds, and beadlocks.  ill be returning back to a toyota master cylinder and running all new brake lines (again).  the idea is to be ready to go by the 4th of july.  ill be done in 3 weeks.

truck before:

Once i got them on jackstands (this sounds easier than it really is, they're heavy in stock form). i just couldnt let them sit there until tomorrow is i tore into the front one in preperation for welding the spiders, shaving the bottom (once shaved it will have the same relative clearance of a Dana 44), and overall just cleaing and wire wheeling everything.

pulled the hubs and bearing (all the breaings are moderate at best, but on a clawler im not awfuly worried about them), cut off the old boots ( i can get all and any rockwell parts at the local orchard machinery place, as they use them in their equipment) and wire straps that hold them on.  this one came with the rapeze style axles, but i knew this when buying them and have a set of U joint in the works.

then it was onto the 'chunk'.  now you really never know what you have when you buy one of these, they are all old, and mostly abused and neglected.  knowing this one was from 1952, i was ready for the worst. . . . .and it was bad.  Solid rust.  rust everywhere.  gears wouldnt really sping freely. . . .overall disgusting.  so i flipped it upside down and dumped a whole bottle of brake fulid (nasty :pokinit:) into the chunk and began to break everything loose.  after about 20 min of spinning, spraying with WD-40, more spinning, some brake clean, more spinning, etc.  i was able to break it all loose and get it looking like new.  pulled the Bull gear, and split the carrier (the Rockwell is much like working on a large 14 Bolt axle) pulled the guts and started cleaning them all for welding tomorrow.  after that i pulled all the inspection plates and wire wheeled everything i could get the grinder to, and cleaned everything with brake clean.

heres how the axle sat at the end of the night:

by tomorrow evening i will have the front axle all cleaned up and ready for shafts, and probably have the rear axle all torn down for welding and cleaning.  ill keep you all posted.

Nothing better than a Toyota + Rockwells.... this will be good

I take it you are going to stick with the Iroks you have (guessing those are somewhere around a 40?)? Or going for bigger rubber along with the new axles?

I'm unfamiliar with your truck. What drivetrain are you using and what tire size are you gonna run?

well, im not sure yet, im sure something will be a pain, but more or less im going for the plug and  play type of deal.  we will see though.

22re/w56/dual ultimate (21 spline, marlin gears, trailgear adapter).  Colby is running duals in the tacomas flavor on his D50 w/ rocks.  well see how it plays out.  with the low axle ratio it will actually be easier on the transfercases etc.

never had toyota pattern ;).  im going to buy some weld in centers for the average 15x10 steel wheel.  i will just cut the center out of the 15x10 and weld in the rockwell patterned center.

Something always gives you a PITA kinda move. its the charm of fabrication, its why it always ends up better then the "over-the-shelf" kind of setups.

you are going to have a LOW ratio thats for sure.... whats the axles ratio again? i dont think you posted that.

oh yeah you had 1tons, are you going to have to dismount the tires... so they dont get too hot while welding?

for tonights update all i have is, not a lot, but it was a time consuming evening.

after a quick dip in the pool after work kyle and i got right to work on the rocks.  while i was welding up the spiders from the front axle

i had him start into the rear axle removing the axles, hubs, brakes, backing plates (. . . . slacker didnt get the backing plates off though)

and finally removing the chunk.

once i got the spiders all welded up and cooled via the pool i reassembled the front chunk and rtv all the inspection covers back on and called the front done.  meanwhile kyle had removed the chunk from the rear. . . .and it was ugly.  way ugly.
looks like in its previous life it had been riddin hard and put away wet.  the gear oil was probably 20+ years old and there was chucks of metal all over the place.  upon further inspection it was obvious that the spider gears gernaded themselves in lodged chunks of metal throughout the center section.

with kyles help i disassembed the chunk and we started fishin out all the broken pieces until we were about 70% sure, and 3 cars of brake clean later, we got everything out.  since i couldnt weld up the spider gears into a neat little ball of a locker (since they were pea gravel sized chunks of steel) i resorted to welding the side gears directly to the carrier halfs, which too for freaking ever becasue i layed 6 passes on each one to make sure they werent going anywhere.  let the halfs cool (without water this time, didnt want to warp them since they are a integral part of the whole thing working correctly) while they were cooling i cleaned up the insides of the housing and started getting them ready for shaving and plating soon.

5/8" thick 6" circle

once the halfs were cool i reassembed the chunk same as the front and determined that they both are ready for battle.  after i quick glance around the shop to asses the mess

(always a mess) and a glance at the watch i called it a night.

tomorrow i will hopfully get the housing shaved and both axles completely assembed.  then friday i will probably get plastered and not work on them at all, but by the end of the weekend i would like to have them completely ready to go under the truck (not saying they are going under the truck ASAP, but still they will be ready.)  i still need to order about $1000 worth of parts, but that will be when i get the money from the tons selling, so we will see.
