dual case vs. single case 4.7
« on: Jun 09, 2008, 08:41:06 AM »
dual cases w/ stock gearing and just gearing your t-case to 4.7...
whats the big differences... is it basically just the variation of having different crawl ratios w/ duals?  cause you can go high low and low low

2 boxes with 4.7 in rear.
High
Low
Super low
Stupid low.
(if you have 2 4.7 gears, I call it Super Stupid Low.)

One box w/ 4.7
High
Super Low
(notice no "low")

Two box w/ stock
High
Low
Low
Super low.
(no stupid low)

Basically, putting a 4.7 in the box saves money (up front).  Then you'll find out how much you really miss your "low" range selection   OR discover you really wish you had "stupid low" and put a 2nd box in.

Most toy 4cyl 35+ rigs will find a benefit from "stupid low" range selection.

I've found that most will want Marlins ultimate set up.  (2 boxes with 4.7 in the rear)  I believe the cheapest way to get there (with 23 splines) is just to buy it all @ once.

The standard low is useful for towing heavy loads...............  (either 1L, 1,2,3,4,5 or if it's city traffic 1L,2L,3L,4L,5L )

<----- needed to do that when towing the Valiant

The 4.7 would be too low for towing (plus it would be pretty hard to shift out of the 4.7 low without stopping like you can with the stock low (double clutch upshift out of low to high))

I kinda like super duper low, and super duper duper low myself.

Just buy the single case with 4.7 I ran this for years. Then you dont have to modify driveshafts, cut a hole in the floor, extend your speedo cable, buy new tcase cross member. With a stock 2.28 case your 3rd gear is basically high range 1st gear which means your only two LOW gears are 4L 1st and 2nd. A 4.7 box drops you low enough so you have no overlapping gear ratios(between high and low) with no additional modifications to your rig. 4.7s are a great improvment to your rig. Then down the road you just add a stock box to your existing 4.7 and you have all kinds of ratios. Hope this helps
