Mostly stock 94 p/u, water fording limits???

 Wondering how deep I can safely go with my truck, 94 yota 4x4, 3'' body lift, 31'' mudders. K&N intake which sucks air from a
little higher than the stock air box.
22RE .30 over, mild cam, K&N, LCE header, 2.25'' pipe, high flow cat, Magnaflow.
Marlin 1200LB clutch

no substitute for 4wheel drive.

If you have breather extensions on the diffs (terminated high in the body), then to the bottom of the body should be safe. Deeper than that, and you run the risk of pushing water up in front of the truck, and drowning the engine. The distributor also has breather holes, which, if they get wet...

Also, remember that it is advised to grease all u-joints, balljoints, etc. after running thru deep water.
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Build it, break it, fix it, repeat until your wallet is empty.

Also, your computer and in cab fuse box are mounted low in the cab, so be aware of that.

Ok, Ok, if you don't have a breather extension on your diffs then no higher than the bottom of the diffs, if you do then no higher than the bottom of the trans/tcase unless you have extensions on those breathers. Beyond that I wouldn't go much more than the bottom of the door for the reasons BD explained. Remember you may  have made the axles, trans and tcase fordable but the engine and electronics will suffer from deep water fording. If by chance you do end up a little too deep and suck water through the intake stop don't even try to start your truck, it is too late. Drag it out pull the plugs and start cranking it, if you try you'll bend a rod with even a single try at starting it. Toyota EFI is like a vacuum cleaner.

I guess I got really lucky when I 'locked mine. I went thru a water hole (playing on my way home from work in my 2wd), pushed water up over my hood, and when coming out the other side, the engine just stopped. I hit the key, and the starter would not turn the crank over; just bumped a little bit. I got out and checked the air filter, and everything was full of water, but was draining (still had water in the airbox, and had no tools or buddies with me). I bumped the starter (would only turn a little bit at a time) repeatedly until the crank finally turned over. It took a minute of cranking over, and finally the plugs started firing. I got it running again, and figured I'd pushed all of the water past the rings into the oil. My house was less than 1/4 mile away, so, I drove on to the house. I got home and shut off the engine and checked the oil, and there was no water in the oil (no milkshake). The only thing I can figure is that the water pushed past the valves, because when It finally cranked up, it made a huge cloud of steam coming from the tailpipe. I recently swapped that same engine into my 4wd, and it runs like a champ.

I'm not saying that damage cannot be done, because I know that water will not compress. Like I said, maybe I just got lucky. Plus, I did not have the engine wound up when it sucked in the water, it was close to idle.

 I'm equipped with diff breathers but I want to be careful this time. I swamped a truck last year which took a lonnng time to dry out and then finally start.

not the same but the 87 4runner i had was running just fine with water even with the top of the grill. another trip i buried it with water halfway up the hood and drowned it, hopefully pat (fearofrunner) can post up the video.

In order of water depth:

#1 Differential Breathers (install breather lines)
#2 Computer inside passenger kick panel (relocate to glovebox)
#2.5 Your fan is probably hitting water by now, prepare for breakage)
#3 Transmission/Transfercase Breathers (install breather lines)
#4 Distributer/Air Intake (seal distributer, relocate air intake near firewall)
#5 Fusebox in cab (you're screwed)
#6 Fusebox under hood (you're really screwed)
#7 Computer relocated to glovebox (Just swim away from it, have the county extract it and pay to get it out of the impound)
