tacoma question
« on: May 25, 2008, 11:57:17 AM »
So I have been looking to buy a new truck. I want a 2nd gen taco like a 2002, but I like the thought of a 4door. However you cant get a 5 speed. I have heard that the auto behind the 3.4 sucks, is that true? I dont get why you cant get a 5speed in the 4door. I would lift it and put like 33-35s on it so what are your guys' thoughts. Thanks Cody

Correct, none of the double cab tacos came with a 5 speed. if they did it would be a custom order and probably very hard to find one. Why? Because Toyota America sucks ass.  :dunno:

The auto doesnt suck, its just naturally not as fun as a 5 speed. :) My dad's 4runner has a 3.4 and an auto (not sure if its the same auto as the newer tacos though) and its not bad at all. Leaves something to be desired for me, since I have only ever owned manual transmission vehicles. By no means sucks though. Its kind of nice, especially for stop and go traffic and commuting.

There are a lot of small lifts for that generation taco. Go test drive a few, and if you get one make sure it has the elocker  :yesnod:

The auto with the 3.4 isn't bad . . . my friend and i both had 2nd gen 4runners one auto and one 5spd. The auto beat me 2 out of 3 times. The auto is not as fun to drive but, it is fairly efficient as far as power loss is concerned. Asked a friend of mine at the local dealership and he said that a 4door 5spd wasn't available.
I would much rather be hated for who i am, rather than bieng loved for who im not!

They did make them.  But most of the country didn't have them shipped to the dealers and as such they were individual one-off order things.  Much like getting a 4x4 Tacoma with the 4 cyl and manual is now.  Or like the 2 door mid 90s 4Runners.

I'd guess less than a a few hundred over nearly a decade made it to the U.S.
