Flat towing with a crawler?
« on: Jul 14, 2004, 12:47:43 PM »
Okay, I've always heard that you needed ot disconnect the rear driveline when flat towing, but can someone tell me why?

If you have a crawler and you put your tranny in neutral, your crawler in neutral, and your rear case in 2wdhi why would you need to disconnect your rear driveline?

The tranny isn't turning if you've disengaged the crawlbox and put the tranny in neutral right?

The driveline is connected to the tail-shaft which has the oil pump drive gear is connected to it so it can't be an oiling issue.  All the gears are spinning in and slinging gear oil any way right?

I would understand that you wouldn't want to flat tow an automatic tranny, but with a gear driven oil bath transfercase is there a problem with leaving the driveshaft attached to the axle while flat towing?  (We're talking freeway towing here.)

Thanks,

Pete

you wouldnt want to take your chances when flat towing.  I know people whos trucks have popped in gear while driving and it wasnt good.  try 17,000 rpms in 1st gear.  the whole motor was gone.  I know that the crawlerbox and the tcase is in neutral but you still have a good chance of having one of em pop in gear.   Its cheap insurance and you dont have to remove the whole driveshaf, just unbolt it from the differential and tie it up next to the gastank or some place in there.   :beerchug:
