3.0 coolant leak
« on: May 14, 2008, 05:28:39 PM »
I have 91 4runner 3.0, its leaking coolant from the back of the engine, I think its near were the block and the heads meet on the passenger side. I can see the coolant dripping from that area underneath the truck, but I cant see the source. Is there a pipe or coolant hose that runs back there?

I can't remember what's back there. You might follow your heater hoses and see if it's one of them. Unfortunetly the 3.0 is known for blowing head gaskets. Check your coolant for discoloration and the under side of the coolant cap and the oil cap for milky residue. Hopefully it's just a hose.

There is a small coolant hose that goes from the center pipe to the sensor pad makes a 180* bend check that one out. Could be headgasket but the 3.0 was more likely to blow into to the cyl. 3.4 was bad about leaking to the out side. Thers also some small freeze plugs look at them good to.

  that center pipe hose dried out and cracked on mine, was dumping water down the back of the engine, made it look like it was coming out of the head.

Well I'm almost 100% sure its that 180 degree hose, I finally found it and I saw coolant dripping onto the top of the manifold crossover pipe. Of course like a dumb ass I didn't take my watch off so when I reached back there with my hand it got stuck and I had to cut the band off with the other hand. Luckily I had my Leatherman on me :smack: But anyways thanks for that suggestion.

The metal water pipe underneath the intake manifold will also rot out & leak. Replaced one on the neighbors truck, had a horrible time finding the leak at first.
