Installing info detroit soft locker
« on: May 07, 2008, 12:48:42 PM »
Allright to the pros, any kind of awal man you should have done this before install that....would be helpful.

98 taco, 4:11 rear- installing new detroit soft locker-full carrier replacement, looks as easy as pulling the old gear set up out removeing ring gear, removing bearings keeping a close eye on the shims, and then rebolting the ring gear to new carrier/locker and done.
So, let me have it... what else to expect and what to get ie-third member gasket axle gaskets....

anybody......

Do you have a dial indicator for checking backlash? If so, check your BL first before you do anything. If not, GET ONE! you will need it.

Pretty much like you said, you will remove the carrier but NOT the pinion. Swap the RG (blue loctite and torque the RG bolts) and side bearings to the new carrier and reinstall to the housing (no shims involved). Set up your BL like you found it and set the bearing preload. Done! Also, if you have a leaking pinion seal now would be the time to change it and replace the crush collar or spacer if needed.  :yesnod:

If you don't have a gasket for the third you can use silicone without any issues. I prefer ultra gray some people like ultra black. Don't use blue or any other pretty colors for this.

If you need links for more info I can post them later.

Thanks I really appreciate the input, how do I check the backlash and bearing preload?

I would suggest reading and understanding this before attempting...as long as you're comfortable with the job then go for it!     The worst that can happen is you get it apart and someone else have to assemble or set it up for you if you get stuck.

if you plan on having it apart and checking the pinion bearings as well or replacing them and the sleeves a good tip is to take the old pinion bearings once off and hone the inside out a little so it will slip on and off for you while you find your correct pinion shim once you got it right install shims and press on new good bearings!
