installing a lockright locker??
« on: Dec 04, 2006, 07:09:01 AM »
Well the story goes that i was getting pulled out of town in my truck.  Alternator locked up.  I had a buddy that lived 2 miles out.  I was gonna get pulled to his house and swap alternators.  Well in the process about 1/2 a mile short of my friends house rear diff locked up,  being towed at about 45 miles per hour it tore up a lot of stuff in the rear.  The pinion gear actually snapped off the shaft and came out the side of the housing.  Well by strange luck i found a rear with 5.29's in it (what i have aready).  But its an open diff, the question is can i remove the lockright locker from my old carrier and put it in the new one without having to do any major work other than that?  Thanks for the help.

yes u can remove the locker just use a tiny flathead screw driver and compress the springs till they can be pulled ouut the hole. Next slide the pins in till the locker is free frof its other half..... Its really self explanitory. :hammer: Hopefully it didn't get hurt when the diff locked up on you!

no i didnt tow in gear.  And the rear should have been in good shape, bearings seemed good no leaks full of gear oil.  I dont know what happend.  But this is the second time.  Once i was driving, locked up on a corner. Sent it back to drivetrain superstores, they replaced it.  And now this time.  But good to know that i should be able to just pull out the locker and put it in the rear i found.   thanks   a lot

You can interchange them, but why not run something else other than a lockrite in the rear.  IMO, they are okay for the front, but unpredictable for the rear.

X2

Check the locker very closely for any damage on the clutch teeth.

go to the powertrax website and reread the install instructions it is fairly simple...just work backwards.

Well i figured out how to take everything apart, but ran into what i might see as a problem.  i've got a chip taken out of the locker where one of the pins are.  I figure it is probably no good but i thought id post som pics and see what you guys think.  The pin or springs wont fall out, but its also not hot or spinning i could weld a patch over it but i dont know how that would work out either.

Worst that could happen is you run it and it breaks, so just carry a spare 3rd.
I'd run it in the front. :gap:

I honestly wouldn't use it. It's junk IMHO. I'd get a aussie locker next time.

kinda what i thought i just hated to stick my gears in with no locker, cause my truck basically gets used as a tractor during the winter months for hauling wood and things, where the tractor wont go.  But the front is locked so i think i'll live.
