I am considering doing an SAS 4WD swap on a '92 Toyota 2WD pickup.  Can I bolt a transfer case to the back of a 2WD tranny or would I have to buy a whole new transmission and transfer case?

im pritty shure you will need a new tranny and the rear axle is different from 4x4 to tell if it has 5 lugs you will need another rear axle out of a 4x4 just make shure that the trans and the t-case match up :beerchug:

Skinny_Pedal

that and the rear axle on the 2wd is only 7.5 in. not 8"

yup thats why i sead he would need a new one a few came with the 8in but i doubt it did if it has 5 lugs its a 7.5in
6 lugs its a 8 in

...actually...

2wds with 4 speeds and 1 ton 2wds had 8" 30 spline axles but they were 5 lug and SUA.  earlier('73 or so to '83 or so) often had the same trannies as 4x4s, such as the l43 and l52.  just had a different tailhousing and maybe output shaft i think.  later trucks used the W55(though i've heard rumor of 1 tons having a W56...haven't confirmed that)

all in all, if you have a tranny, t-case and a set of axles, it wouldn't be that big of a task compared to SASing a regular IFS 4x4.  you could even use a 2wd box which are setup for crossover, but you'd have to move it up to the front of the frame as(at least 70s 2wds) had the box close to the firewall.  those had forward facing pitman arms, not sure about later box

2nd or 3rd gen(as in '73-78 trucks) didn't have the engine mounts on the frame -- they had them on the center crossmember(coil spring front vs torsion bars) which locates them about an inch from the frame on both sides.  not sure if you'd need to cut this away from the frame when doing an SAS, might have to build new engine mounts that attach to the frame if the crossmember has to go

Skinny_Pedal

if this makes a difference from what u said the truck he is talking about is a 92 pickup with a 5 speed and no power steering

Easy swap, just start hackn' and cutn' on it, change the rearend and trans, gut the interior for a flat belly ;) bolt in a 4wd trans cases, and a front axle and your done.  See its easy!

He didn't have the flames when i rode in the truck.  It was white at that time, but he painted the flames after that.  This was at Goldendale, the CalRocs comp.  I am not lying about anything.  You can ask WT yourself, I even had a    with him.  Me ---> :beerchug:<--- White Trash   86runner-sas was there too but he was off bein  :stopit:

Oh WT I had told 81Toy4x that It would be a long and dificult process to convert from 2 to 4wd, and I told him this because thats what I had read...that something with the frame woulnt go right and all this thing...but they did the article on a chevy so maybe yotas are easier :-\\

WHITE_TRASH

Yotas are actually about the easiest thing to convert to 4x, well there are some old dodge's and internationals that are way easier but I wont jack this thread that much.  The frames on 3rd gen 2x's have a higher "arch" above where the front axle goes so you have more clearance.

SWAMPER

So what your saying is that in that void "arch" thres enuf space for the T-Case? :headscratch:

WHITE_TRASH

Nope the area where the motor mounts are welded to the frame is actually higher so you have more room for the front axle and steering clearance.  The area for the t-case is a bit smaller but using a stock crossmember it would still fit.

What about the second generation 2wd truck frames? How do these compare to the solid axle frames, and to the 3rd gen. 2wd frames. Reason I'm asking, is I have an 86 2wd I'm thinking about converting over to the dark side.
