I would recommend a MIG welder for the most versatility in the kind of fabricating done on 4wd rigs.  Much easier to use than a stick for thin or out of position welding.  Also easier in confined areas where you have limited space to move.  Most of the good MIGs can also be set up for aluminium if needed.

If you want top notch equipment go with a MillerMatic 251.

If you want quality but don't need that much power the MillerMatic 210 runs quite nice.  You might even get away with the Miller 175

If you want a small portable unit the Lincoln Pro-mig 175 is amazing for it's size.

If you don't have access to 220V and need a 110v then just get any reputable brand.  Keep in mindd that it won't have the power of the bigger machines and projects will take a lot of extra welding time.

You also have the option of using a shielded or gasless wire feed welder.

All of the welding on my SAS was done with a Lincoln 110v 130amp and I have not had a single problem with any of the welds in 8 years. I chose a 110volt for portability.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

Do you really think we need anything bigger than a 175 to weld on Yotas?

Did the springover on my YJ with a Lincoln 3500HD fromm Homedepot its a 135 amp flx core welder, I wheeled Tellico, river rock, Moab, and Alaska witn no failed welds. I am useing the same welder to build my Toyota.  I like it because I can throw it in the trailer when we go raceing and I weld stuff up in the pits, and also I can run it off a small generator.

That's what I like about my 175 promig too.  I can grab it and go in a matter of seconds.  I've even used it in camp with my buddies RV generator...  :yesnod:
