Edited to hopefully simplify it some...

Somebody at work came in with this one, said it was sent in an email as one of those "are you smarter than a 5th grader?" things.  As soon as he wrote it up on the board I said the technique you need to use to get the proper total, but everybody else used a different approach and got the same answer as each other but different from mine.  They thought I had it wrong, but every time I did my match it just seemed right to me, and about 10 minutes later they all started second guessing themselves and determined I had the right answer....  see what you get and I'll let you know what I got after people have had a little time to work on it.  I'm going to pm the answer to glen right now and tell him how I got it, just so somebody knows the answer from the get go.

There were 7 girls.  Each girl had 7 purses.  Each purse had 7 cats in it.  Each cat had 7 kittens.  How many legs are there total?

49 purses times 56 cats/kittens per purse= 2744 cats/kittens

2744 cats/kittens=10976 legs

10976+14=10990

edit: girls only have 2 legs, not 4.  oops

Don't feel dumb!  Some minds work different than others, and while I don't consider myself to be very intelligent, my mind just happens to function in such a way that the technique to obtain the total was blatantly obvious to me.  There's one older guy in the shop who's much smarter than I am, but even he joined the majority in coming up with the wrong answer.  It wasn't until he spent almost 1/2 hour going over my formula I'd written on the board, complete with answer and full explanation, that it finally soaked in.  At that point, everybody else kinda started to get it too and realized I was the only one to get it right!  Ofcourse that led to me proclaiming that I was officially the smartest mechanic in the shop, and singing "I am the champions!" every time I came back in the shop  :haha:

Each purse had 7 cats, while each cat had 7 kittens.  How many legs are there total?

7 kittens x 7 cats = 49 cats X 4 legs = 196 fuzzy legs

196 fuzzy legs X  7 purses = 1372 so thats 1372 fuzzy legs per girl

7 girls X 1372 = 9604

so a total of 9604 per girl,  each girl has  2 legs  so add another leg for each girl  and thats 9611
