Hello from Oceanside, CA
« on: Apr 01, 2008, 02:57:21 PM »
Signed up a few days ago, been spending a lot of free time reading and searching. Lotsa great info here - most over my head at this stage...

Currently I drive a 98 4cyl PreRunner, but have collected nearly all the parts to convert to an IFS. SAS maybe further down the road, a lot further :)

Been running into hurdles trying to adapt a 3.4L A340F trans and tcase to the 2.7L. No problems with the swapping of bellhousings and bolting the A340F trans to the motor. Problem lies in the tcase shifter and where it 'wants' to enter the cab, about 2 inches further back than the factory opening.

As I've researched this problem, I have discovered that the 4cyl auto tranny taco 4x4's came with a 'forward shift' assy, whereas the 6cyl autotranny taco 4x4's came with a 'top shift' assy. I'm trying to get a visual on what exactly the forward shift tcase and shifter are. And can a forward shift shifter be fitted to the transfer case I have.

But this is a "Hello, I'm...." post - So "Hi!"

Making progress on my prerunner to IFS conversion. Bulk of the work was finished up over the weekend.

Still need to get the front driveshaft lengthened, tcase shifter lever needs cutting/welding. Still trying to resolve a #1VSS issue. The one I took out of an 04 tcase doesn't do anything in the 99 4runner tcase I installed. And I sold the 04 tcase before realizing this... So right now, no working speedo and a CE light (code P0500).

Other than that, I need to finish up the installation of the various ADD components (elect and vac lines). Decide whether to bother with hooking up the three tcase positioning switches. But it's close to being a functioning 4x4... :crossed:

 :welcome: from Grass Valley, CA

Sounds like quite a project. If you've got any pictures you should post them. I dont think anyone on here has ever done a Prerunner 2WD to 4WD IFS conversion. Most people here just go straight to a solid axle. anyway welcome to turtle land  :turtle3:

thanks Jose :D

But, Hey, once you've seen one IFS Taco, you've seen them all..

No real surprises on the conversion, at least nothing that could have been avoided had I did more research/been a little more patient before dropping the coin on various components. Such as an incompatible transmission..

Basically, remove PreRunner tranny, install 4WD tranny and tcase, install rear driveshaft. Install front diff, remove PreRunner spindles, install 4WD spindles, install CV's, install front driveshaft, fill with fluids, rock and roll...

What I've learned: Throttle-by-wire transmission is incompatible with the earlier trucks (first mistake). Factory 4x4 tacos with 2.7L and auto trannys use a forward shift tcase rather than a top shift. (the extra length of the engine block 'pushes' the trans and tcase about 2-1/2" further aft.) Of course, this means that each drive shaft had to be modified, and so does the tcase shifter lever. The ideal donor vehicle would've been a 2.7L Auto Tranny 4WD, but those are a rare bird. 4Runners use ABS sensors instead of the #1VSS to operate the speedometer and simply putting a VSS into the opening in the tcase will not work if there is a mis-match on the gears..... Don't part with any 'extra' parts until you've completed the swap. Example - Had I held onto the 04 tranny and tcase, I'd probably be able to swap tcases and no longer have the P0500 and VSS problem - or at least swap out the worm gear on the output shafts.

5 long months of one hassle after another, but I'm done with the conversion. Had the maiden run this past weekend running the White and Gold Mtn trails in the Big Bear area.

wow, your truck has come a long way from when I say it a little over a year ago.  I knew you got bit by the bug, but damn!  Just so everyone knows, this was a bone stock open rear diff prerunner about 1 year ago.  Now it has what looks like a stout front bumper, sliders, arb rear locker and best of all 4X4.

Glad to see you are having fun!  Can't wait to see you out on the trails.

After completing the basics on this conversion, I've slowly been adding and tweaking things...  None that really improve the trucks off-road capability. Most mods have been for comfort.

Purchased a CampingLab RTT, had a custom bedrack fabbed to transport the tent and had the rear frame palted with CBI plates, Stuck an Edgestar 43qt 12 volt fridge behind the drivers seat, added extra 12 volt cig lighter receptacles in the back of the truck, xmas present from the girls was a Tantrum VisionX LED rocklights set which have been installed.  Need to upgrade the rear suspension, Have an XD9000 winch lined up and should have that filling the hole in the front bumper in the next few weeks. Which also means I need to add a second battery. I've got CAD sketches for a couple of bed mounted jerry can holders that I need to get to work on.

Truck just flipped the odo over 200K yesterday.

We go out on average once a month, Anza Borrego, Calico, Corral Canyon, Santa Rosa Mtns, etc. - Knock on wood, the truck is still running strong (it's my daily driver also).  Hasn't let me down on the trails at all - Truck is more capable than the driver - everything I've asked it to do, it has done without complaint.

Here's a couple of recent pics

My wheeling direction has gone more towards overlanding rather than rockcrawling   :wink2:

WOW that tent setup looks awesome!  A far cry from the wife and myself (i'm 6'4" 200 lbs) squeezing into the back of the runner!  Nice clean truck Sir!

Where is that canyon in the last post?

That's up in the Calico Mtns (by the Calico Ghost Town). That trail is part of the Odessa Loop, I think the canyon name is Bismark....

FYI - Big Bear is this years location for the annual TTORA Takeover
