I think it comes from back in the old days when the housings split in the center. so you had the left side  the right side and the center or the third member.  It could also be called that  because it is the third in the order of power transmission(engine, transmission and third member).

Its because there used to be 3 of them with the 1st member being hidden behind the glove box.  Toyota ultimatly decided that this system was cumbersome and bulky at best, so they removed the 1st member to the design that you see today, but the name however stuck.

From back in the day. It was reffered to as the 3rd member as it was the 3rd member in the powertrain line. (engine, tranny, third)

Question #2

Why does the Toyota Power steering box say Toyoda on it?
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.
