Well, y'see... I figure I need to justify my answer now.  Rather than maybe search on here or even Google, the question was asked with absolutly zero thought.  So, I put the same effort into my answer.  While my answer is correct in every sense, it is by no means thought out or detailed.  You get out what you put in.

although  some 83's  can be found with 2L  or 2LT toyota diesels in them  the 1KZ  was never a option in the USA  but can be imported

Mounts are the least of your worries - even if you have to fab them.  What about wirring and plumbing?  Since you live in California, you won't be able to smog it so you can't drive it on the roads with a diesel.  California will let you swap a gas motor into a gas truck if the donor motor is newer than the old motor that was in your truck.  The B.A.R. won't approve a gas vehicle with a diesel engine swapped into it.  The only way to get around it is to make it a green stickered registration and trailer it to all trails you go to.

X2 even when i swapped in a 22RE into my 84, i still had to cut a hole in the firewall for the extra wiring, switched out the  gas tank/lines, wiring, and a bunch of other stuff. i at one point almost put a 2L that i found in an 83 2WD but it didn't have a tranny with it and it would've been a hassle because rats and other creatures had nested in it and chewed through everything as it sat in a field. i fixed what i could and got it to run though and it still ran like a champ after sitting  for years.

If you are ever in fresno there is a place called All Engines they have toyota diesel engines.  I was just in there the other day and was looking at a 5L 3.0 liter they have a bell housing to bolt up a G52/54 tranny this is almost a direct bolt in application and it's manually fuel injected allthough it is not Turbocharged.  As for getting them road legal in  CA I've heard all you have to do is go to the smog referee in fresno near all engines and have them inspect your handy work.  As long as you install an engine that is complete from the year of your truck or newer and you havn't modified the engine's performance itself you should get their OK.  Once you have their OK then you have to change your rigs info with the DMV.  Other diesel engines that you could install are the 1L, 2L, 2L-TE, 3L, 5L, 1kz-te, And Im not sure about this one but it is one of toyota's newest turbo diesels 2kdft not completely sure about the engine name of the last one.  Perez wholesale distributer quoted me 7500.00 for a 1kz-te halcut.

As far as a straight drop in conversion, the closest you could get would be with a toyota 2l or a 2lt. You can use the same mounts with these engines. However, a bigger radiator and different bell housing are a must. This is not to mention all of the other thinkgs like relays and air filters and the like.
