fj80 and t100 axles...
« on: Feb 16, 2008, 09:59:17 AM »
What front axle measures up to a t100 rear axle? I was thinking... the t100 has a wider rear axle then the pickups but what front axle matches that width? I searched it and couldnt find anything on it. Can you keep it yota, without putting a d44 up front? like an axle out of a cruiser?

Probably closest you'll come is fj80 front, but I think it'll still be a hair narrower.

Are you just pondering going with a t100 rear or do you already have one?  If not, I'm getting one to part out.  It's 2wd but still 6 lug.

well i actually want to build a 90s 4runner and i want it wide but keep it light. Toyota axles are light but narrow. T100 are light and wide. I went an played in the snow and my cousin has a 88 runner locked up front and rear dual cased and 38s, I did better then him in some places, i think it is because he is runnin a 44 and 12bolt, they are heavy. but who knows.

you can just space the rest of the width difference tho.

Did a little research on Pirate. According to them the fj80 is 63.5" and the taco is 60" and the t100 is 67" with some 1.5" wheel spacers you can get the fj80 axle to 66.5" or 2" wheel spacers to be 67.5" that is only a 1/2" both ways not to far off. Or get a taco rear axle and space it to 63" using 1.5" spacers. again 1/2". I think that the t100 rear axle would not be to hard to find, same with a taco rear axle. The fj80 would be a different story. So you can get a t100 rear, space a fj80 front and be 8 inches wider then someone with hilux front and IFS rear. So why dont people do it? Or can you not gear the t100 like the IFS rear end. Can you stick a 4cyl diff in those axles? What about the FJ80? ok so from my understanding the different axles measure...

FRONT
Hilux is 55?" wide and ...lbs
Fj80 is 63.5" wide and ...lbs
narrow d44 is .." wide and ...lbs
full width d44 is .." wide and ...lbs
full width d60 is .." wide and ...lbs

REAR
85 hilux and below is 55" wide and ...lbs
IFS is 58.5" wide and ...lbs
Taco is 60" wide and ...lbs
t100 is 67" wide and ...lbs
12 bolt is .." wide and ...lbs
14 bolt is .." wide and ...lbs
d60 is .." wide and ...lbs
d70 is .." wide and ...lbs

probably wont get the wieght but would be interesting.

I'm not sure about the t100 axle but I have a high pinion FJ80 3rd member in my 85 pickup front axle so I don't see why you shouldn't be able to put a 4cyl 3rd in an FJ80 front axle.

In the fj80 front axle you CAN put a 4cyl. 3rd in it.  Theyre the same spline count at the diff.

I have talked to several people that ran up to 42's locked front n rear on the stock inners.  The birfields on those thing are like the size of grape fruits.  I paid 1100 for front and rear fj80 axles.  the front you will have to make custom steering.  I made a zlink for the front and kept the tie rod behind the axle.  In order to keep the tie rod behind the axle you have to run the high pinion 3rd.

No prob. the biggest pregnant dog is cuttin all the brackets off, puttin perches on and finding u bolts to work right.  I had to make like 1.5" wedges to weld on my perches to get the caster right.

I believe 27 as well but the axle doesnt neck down at all.  Ive seen where people put the fj80 outer balls on mini housings and run the fj80 birfields and outer chunks.  The rotors are huge, you either have to run a 16" wheel or wheel spacers for a 15" to clear.  2.5" bs rims would clear too

I scored an fj80 front axle for $250 minus the third for the front end of my truck. It will accept a 4cyl. diff. It measures 63 inches wide wms to wms I know pirate says different, but that's what we measured). The steering seems to be the big issue with these things. Using a Z-link for the steering is the easiest way to make it work, but you will need to run the tierod behind the axle (which I've been told will get bent), and you'll have to carry a highpinion spare. You can run the tierod in the front in any number of different ways, but almost all take some ingenuity. OTT might still do the machine work, but your best bet is to go through Jim at inchworm, and then you'll still be looking at a very long wait (Jim mentioned 6 month to a year). Slee offroad is now making a kit, but it's really more designed for a full hydro set-up, and you'll be looking in the neighborhood of a grand for the whole set-up (their arms for the top, a stock lower arm from over sea's, tierods, and draglinks) which doesn't include ram, valve, hoses, or pump for the full hydro set-up. As for the brakes, I'm not sure on the year of the front end I got, but the rotors are massive. They completely dwarf the stock SA rotors. It's definently a worthy swap, it just takes a little work to make it happen. Let me know if you have any other questions about this thing.

i belive 4x4labs does steering for  cruisers along with the mini truck setups.Yes, the mini truck setup runs the tierod behind the axle too...But it ain't cheap though..$550 beforte tax.....How about that.... Three of my buddies runthat setup and it is the sh---t. With 1ton chevy tre's, you can't go wrong or need to carry a spare joint....But yes, very pricy but worth it.
